Life & Work with Christopher Barela of Pomona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Barela

Hi Christopher , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My names Chris Barela and I run For The Core Zine Based out of Pomona,CA. I’ve been shooting film since I was young and started this Zine as a way to express myself and show my life in memorable way! I figured pictures are worth a 1.000 words so why not show what I’m around and the things I like! I’ve used a film camera for as long as I can remember! I give all the love and inspiration to my Grandparents Robert and Eloisa Barela (R.I.P) & my aunt Kathy who gave a camera to begin with! Without the love and support from all my family and friends I wouldn’t be where I’m at today as a creative, artist or Photographer. Life’s funny when you think about where it can take you with things if you try hard enough!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! As a creative I’ve thrown art shows and been in the hole -$1000 but you gotta pay to play! Be a good person and be genuine! Not everything is gonna work but keep throwing stuff at the wall and it’ll stick at some point! F#*k anyone’s opinion on what you do IF YOU THINK ITS COOL THEN IT IS! People see right through fakeness in anything you do!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Day Job I work for a uniform service company but Artist wise I do photography and Curate and Coordinate Art Photography Shows to allow younger artists and people to have an outlet. I’ve always loved helping people and giving back in some type of way in life. I’d say something I’d be known for is not sticking to one thing or style if I could explain myself I’d say I’m a man of many loves I can go to a Punk show, Car Show, Country Concert or a Art Gallery Showing. Something I’m most proud is just Creating Physical Work and having the honor of being included in SuperChief Gallery’s Yearly Show “Contagious Culture” the last 2 years showing the work of some of Los Angeles best photographers. I think something that sets me apart is being able to adapt in any environment and shoot my own style I don’t stick to one thing I feel sometimes you get stuck shooting one style of photography and that’s great but at times it’s nice to have different things to show to be versatile!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Honestly just work smarter not harder take the failed outcomes as a lesson and add them to your list of don’t dos for the next time. Life is hard but you gotta be harder! Each time you do something and practice it gets easier so just be patient and work with who you want to As an artist it’s okay to be selective but don’t get an ego about it.
