Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina
Hi Christina , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in the communities of Lincoln Heights and El Sereno, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that many families face—poverty, gang violence, and limited access to resources. Despite these struggles, I also saw the strength, resilience, and deep sense of community that shaped my upbringing. I grew up surrounded by individuals who, despite their circumstances, found ways to support one another, whether through friendship or family. These experiences instilled in me a deep commitment to giving back and ensuring that others, especially our youth, have access to opportunities that can change the trajectory of their lives. As I navigated my own journey and went through my own healing process, I saw how systemic barriers often kept people in cycles of hardship, but I also learned that with the right support, guidance, and resources, change is possible. This understanding fueled my passion for community work and ultimately led me to dedicate my life to advocacy, mentorship, and creating spaces where individuals can heal, grow, and thrive. Today, my work is a reflection of the community that raised me—a commitment to lifting others up and providing pathways to success, just as I once needed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe that anything great is never achieved without challenges. Healing Urban Barrios was built through perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to our mission—despite the inevitable ups and downs that come with starting and sustaining any organization. Like any journey worth taking, there were obstacles, setbacks, and moments of doubt. There were those who didn’t believe in the mission, and those who didn’t believe in me. But adversity has a way of revealing purpose, and every challenge only strengthened my resolve.
Being a strong woman, especially in spaces where leadership is often questioned or challenged, comes with its fair share of naysayers. But I have learned that true leadership is not about proving people wrong—it’s about staying true to your vision, showing up for your community, and continuing the work regardless of who stands beside you. The struggles I have faced, both personally and professionally, have not only built resilience but have also shaped Healing Urban Barrios into what it is today—a beacon of healing, empowerment, and transformation. The challenges we endure are what make us stronger, and I am committed to turning every obstacle into an opportunity to uplift myself and those around me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the Founder and Executive Director of Healing Urban Barrios, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2017. With over 15 years of experience working with youth and young adults—particularly those impacted by systemic barriers, violence, and substance use—I have dedicated my career to advocating for marginalized communities and creating pathways for healing and empowerment. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology, equipping me with a deep understanding of the complexities faced by justice-involved individuals and vulnerable populations. My expertise lies in nonprofit program management, service delivery, and program development, with a strong track record of designing and implementing impactful initiatives. I have developed programs addressing substance abuse treatment, gang intervention, and workforce development—ensuring that at-risk youth receive the critical resources and support needed to achieve stability and success. As a leader in urban community development, I am committed to expanding my impact by supporting the growth of new nonprofit organizations and social enterprises that promote community preservation, empowerment, and long-term sustainability. Under my leadership, Healing Urban Barrios remains at the forefront of innovative, community-driven solutions that transform lives and uplift neighborhoods.
What matters most to you?
My family is everything to me. Everything I pursue, build, and work toward is for the people I love. I am blessed to have a great man who loves me, a supportive family, and a small circle of friends who genuinely want the best for me. I believe my creator has given me strength not just for myself, but to share with others. Beyond my loved ones, my passion lies in seeing people grow and feel empowered to embrace the best that life has to offer. I know that achieving success is often easier said than done, but what matters most to me is leading by example. Through my actions and hard work, I want my community to see that we can rise above our circumstances—that we can build something from nothing. Success isn’t always found through conventional means, and sometimes, we have to carve our own paths. If that’s what it takes, then so be it. What matters is finding love, purpose, and strength in unexpected places and using that to create change—not just for ourselves, but for those around us.
