Life & Work with Cayley Spivey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cayley Spivey.

Hi Cayley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing songs in my bedroom when I was 15, I wrote my first single “New Dork Pity” under the alias “Small Talks”. Not long after that and booking tons of local shows at coffee shops in my hometown of Myrtle Beach, I was discovered by Common Ground Records. I started touring the country and outside of it, I released a debut album under the name Small Talks titled “A Conversation Between Us”. Then Covid put a pause of everything and I had no choice but to use all my creative efforts in a different, digital way. I started making TikToks at the suggestion of my manager, I had no problem being vulnerable and sharing my life online. I amassed a following of over 200k within a year on the app, I hadn’t seen that sort of engagement ever before. Through the pandemic, I went public with my queerness and decided to start making music under my own name since a lot of people began to recognize me because of the videos about my music I was posting on my personal account. Since then I’ve released a debut EP under my own name, made some music videos, opened for G Flip in Los Angeles, and am in the process of releasing tons of new music this year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Touring as a female brought a lot of challenges, I often found it hard to find my voice because I was naturally looked over when it came to finding the point of contact for the band, they would walk right by and talk to the nearest man. I found that funny in some ways because I was a solo artist and my band was hired, but nobody ever asked me about my own set haha.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/songwriter. I’m known for touring with my band Small Talks and my lgbtq+/music focused content. I’m most proud of my advocacy online. I love inspiring others to chase their dreams. I feel like what sets me apart is my ability to speak from a place of truth and curiosity at all times, I feel a lot of empathy toward others and am an open book about my experiences and it reflects in my music and performances.

What matters most to you?
Being genuine, even if you’re different. I believe owning the things that make you different and loving them is the way to living your best life.
