Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Reeves.
Hi Carly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Los Angeles into a well known Hollywood family, however it did not pave the way so easily for me. Having my uncle be one of the most iconic actors of all time, you may think that being an actor myself should make things pretty easy but I had to learn how to do things the hard way just like every other actor. I started in school where my passion for it grew and when I knew I really wanted to do it professionally I worked retail and server jobs to make money so that I could take acting classes and casting director workshops to get seen. Everyone always asks, “why doesn’t your uncle help you?” Well he was able to get me a small part in a little movie that he directed but that was it. Once I had a little “reel” he said, now you can show that to get more parts. I had to work hard on my own. That was the lesson I had to learn. People were going to assume I was successful because of my relationships but I had to keep proving that I was receiving jobs on my own. It gave me stength and power to know that my talent was proof enough and I didnt need my uncle’s name to show my worth. Even today I still do hustling jobs like instacart shop, uber eats drive, and UGC brand gigs and I am definitely not rich. However, I get by and that’s good enough for me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, In my 20s I was a reckless person! I got arrested a lot and drew all the wrong kind of attention toward myself. I was self-destructive and was drinking too much. I didnt respect myself and saw myself as nothing special. I had to dig deep through therapy and growing up that life is hard and not everyone is going to like you. You cannot please everyone. I have been fired from so many jobs, it became laughable. I did not work well with others. It was hard for me to find a career other than acting that I loved. I resented my family for not helping more but I had to figure it out on my own. I felt alone a lot because I was not in a relationship for a lot of my life. Now I am in a healthy loving relationship and I respect and love myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an actor who has been in Larry Crowne, Raise Your Voice, and many of the recently popular vertical films and I do lots of brand UGC. I was also on ABC’s reality show CLAIM TO FAME where I had an EPIC meltdown because I got eliminated on night one. I was very upset and people thought I was crazy and entitled because I really wanted to stay longer on the show. My clues were really easy so I got angry and sad. I am just really emotional and sometimes can’t control my emotions.
I love theater and comedy and writing and performing parodies. I have written and performed about 6 parodies which are on my website www.carlyreeves.com I am most proud of graduating from UCLA and getting my real estate license.
What sets me apart is my silliness and weirdness and not being afraid to be yourself. I am very crass and blunt and some people see this as off-putting, but I’m just me!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My mom has always been my biggest supporter. She has come to every play, musical, premiere, etc that I have been a part of. Although my lack of employment stability was concerning at times, she was always confident I would figure it out somehow. And I always did!
