Today we’d like to introduce you to Belle Johnson
Hi Belle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in the lively streets of Watts, CA, was like living in a rhythm-packed musical—you could almost hear the beat as you walked! I came from a musical family, and I had no idea my dad, Big Henry Johnson, was out there slaying it as the lead singer of the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. No wonder I was singing and acting practically from the cradle, thinking it was as normal as breathing.
As a youngster, I’d grab the newspaper—not just for cartoons—but to hunt down talent shows where I could let my star shine! Along with my girl group, 2 Loc’d Out, we basically owned every talent show in Watts, rubbing shoulders with folks like Brandy, Ray J, and Tyrese. Those were the days! We had our own fairy godfather, Don Johnson, who turned his home into our rehearsal palace and mentored us at Will Rogers Park’s talent show extravaganzas.
Fast forward to high school, and BAM! Tyrese’s Coca-Cola commercial hit like a cannonball: “He made it?!” That was it—I was supercharged with dreams of ruling the music and songwriting world. The journey’s on, and I’m all in!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
From a very young age, the road to the music industry has been strewn with obstacles, each as personal as it is universal. Singing has been my soul’s expression since I could make a sound, yet my journey was overshadowed by the critics, who saw not my gift, but merely my size. The fixation on looks in the music world felt like an unscalable wall, and the first brick in that wall was laid by my own father, who told me my skin color wasn’t right for the genre I cherished.
These words shaped an early insecurity in me, a haunting voice that whispered that those who were lighter and slimmer were somehow more deserving. It was a struggle that often made me feel like an outsider in the very space where I yearned to belong. Despite the noise, there was an unyielding fire in my heart; a conviction that singing and songwriting were not just things I did, but elements of who I am.
The constant barrage of critiques urging me to alter myself eventually led me to an alternative path. I found solace and opportunity in singing background for major artists. It was not the dream I painted in my mind’s eye, but it was a fulfilling compromise. It allowed me to stay connected to my passion, nurturing my art even as I strived to silence the doubts.
Reflecting on these struggles, I see a journey not defined by the industry’s demands, but by my unwavering choice to follow my passion, to find my voice amidst the noise, and to hold onto the belief that who I am is enough.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
If you had asked me this question ten years ago, my immediate response would have been that I specialize in singing. While that’s still true, my life has evolved beautifully to include not just a thriving career, but also the joys of being a recording artist, a mom, and a wife. My career now is a blend of home-based projects and thrilling performances as a solo artist, or with the legendary Euro dance duo, La Bouche.
So, let me redefine my answer: I specialize in singing and creativity. These are not just skills but instincts that I’ve honed over the years. I’ve had the honor of performing as a background vocalist for phenomenal artists like George Duke, Eric Benet, Idina Menzel, Lauryn Hill, Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez, Lizzo, and the inspiring Sunday Service Choir. My journey is punctuated with moments of resilience that I’m profoundly proud of. Adorning my wall are accolades like Grammy, Dove Award, and American Music Award nominations.
What sets me apart in the entertainment industry is the path I’ve walked entirely on my own. I’ve navigated the complex world of entertainment with grit and determination, thriving against the odds. This mission isn’t just about personal success. It’s a testament to resilience and unwavering hard work—one that my children can look back on with pride.
I’m delighted to have defied being confined to a single genre. My songwriting skills have touched various artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Faith Evans, Syleena Johnson, Erica Campbell, and myself. While I still strive for widespread recognition, I cherish being part of the musical legacy of Watts, CA—a place brimming with talent, resilience, and a defiance against ‘no.’ Being associated with it alongside greats like The Whispers, Patrice Rushen, and Kenyon Dixon is an honor.
I’ve had the unique opportunity to feature in national commercials, balancing these professional milestones with being an amazing mom and wife. Today, my focus is on solidifying my reputation as a solo recording artist in the dance music genre. My goal is for people to know exactly who I am and appreciate the work I craft with passion.
This journey encompasses everything I’ve done—embracing my creative instincts, nurturing resilience, and celebrating my roots. It’s a testament to the power of dreams, a unique narrative woven from hard-earned experiences and victories that defy conventional expectations. I aim to be a role model, showcasing that even without a safety net, you can rise, redefine success, and leave a mark that resonates.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?

Remember, inspiration and guidance can come from various places, and often, your passion will attract the right people into your journey.
