Hi Aura, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I came to California over 25 years ago, like everyone else, looking for a better life. I didn’t know what I was interested in but I knew that the USA offered endless opportunities. One day, I went to a hair salon in Beverly Hills and realized that I was attracted to the beauty industry because I loved the diversity in the salon and I saw that every stylist had their own specialty. I had the opportunity to learn about curly hair. My entire life, I struggled managing my curly hair. I was never happy with my hair because I was never taught on techniques to care for it. At the salon, I learned the basic knowledge regarding curls. It is my mission to guide other curlies on their journey and give them the knowledge they need to care for their hair. The beauty of curly hair is that you don’t need thousands of items. The three most essential things are water, moisturizer and leave in conditioner, and styling gel. The journey was not without a challenge but in 2017 I was able to open my own business. I am happy to see my dream come true and help my clients on their journey.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The journey has not always been easy. Many times opportunities were not readily available. Being a minority, people did not expect me to be successful. I have always understood that being passionate and working hard are the key to success. When you love what you do, your work reflects it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a curly-certified stylist who specializes in the care of natural curly hair. I am trained on how to cut, layer, and style curly hair of all types. Whether clients have loose, wavy or classic curls through unique cutting techniques, I bring uniformity to curls and show clients how to style ringlets.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson is to never give up on the things that make you passionate. Throughout my journey, I learned to be humble, honest and unique. Every client that walks through the door is special. I thank god for allowing me the opportunity to help me use my talents to help others.
