Life & Work with Athena Newton of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Athena Newton.

Athena Newton

Hi Athena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all began a few years back when I realized there was a gap in the market for stylish, comfortable clothing that could effortlessly transition from day to night. I wanted to create pieces that would make women feel confident and empowered, without sacrificing their values. That’s how ATHENA NEWTON DESIGNS (AND) was born.

The Smock Blouse is a prime example of our commitment to timeless, versatile design. It’s a piece that can be dressed up or down, making it a true wardrobe staple.

But it’s not just about style. We’re committed to sustainable and ethical fashion. The pieces are locally produced using locally sourced fabrics, most of which are organic. This approach minimizes our carbon footprint and supports local businesses.

It all started when I noticed people were complimenting my personal style. I began selling and lending out pieces and eventually, the demand grew. I realized I had a unique opportunity to create something special that aligned with my values. So, I took the leap and founded ATHENA NEWTON DESIGNS (AND).

Today, I’m excited to continue growing AND and expanding our product range. I’m even working on a unisex collection, which is something I’m particularly passionate about.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth journey. Like any entrepreneur, I’ve experienced the highs and lows. There are days filled with excitement and others clouded by doubt. The constant challenge of navigating a creative industry, especially one as saturated as this, can be daunting.

Last year, I hit a particularly rough patch, leading me to temporarily abandon my passion for a more traditional work route. The less-than-encouraging work environment I was in quickly reaffirmed my true calling. I realized that my creativity and entrepreneurial spirit couldn’t and more importantly, shouldn’t be ignored.

While the path has been arduous at times, it has also been INCREDIBLY rewarding. The personal and professional growth I’ve experienced has been immeasurable. I’m grateful for the challenges, as they’ve shaped me into a stronger, more resilient individual. And, best of all, the business is still alive and kicking… and growing!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
AND specializes in crafting seasonless, timeless clothing designed to effortlessly transition from day to night. Our pieces are tailored for the modern woman. I’m so proud and grateful of how the brand has evolved into a go-to for chic, versatile wardrobe staples. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the designs worn by incredible women all over the world.

What sets us apart? Our commitment comfort and style combined. We’re not just chasing trends. And we’re proud to be part of a growing community of people who believe that fashion can be both beautiful, sustainable, and timeless.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk has always been a constant in my life. I’ve always been drawn to the unknown, the thrill of the challenge. I’m not reckless; I’m a calculated risk-taker 😉 I believe in taking measured steps, but I’m also not afraid to push boundaries.

Starting my own business at 36 was a significant risk. It required leaving a comfortable job and diving headfirst into the uncertain waters of entrepreneurship. But it was a risk worth taking. Experiences like this have shaped me into the person I am today; a bit of a rebel with a conscious mind.
