Life & Work with April Patterson

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Patterson.

Hi April, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started this journey as a mother of kid actors who eventually joined her kids in the entertainment industry. After years as an actress, I was invited to teach at an acting studio. My insight as a parent to kid actors, an actress, and a coach to many motivated my desire to help actors, specifically young actors, operate at their healthiest mental capacity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy journey. One of the motivators for this journey was witnessing so many friends struggle with their mental health and experiencing struggles myself. I knew there were high pressures in this industry, and the kids’ mental health in this industry was the least advocated for. Being qualified to do this type of work was accompanied by the decision to face my own mental health struggles.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a brain-science mental health coach that focuses on kid actors. It’s a really interesting balance. I’m an actress that focuses on the mental health of other actors, so I”m constantly regulating myself. I am absolutely not exempt from this industry’s trials and tribulations.

I’ve worked with children my entire adult life and love serving them in any capacity. I genuinely believe that children are our future, and it is our responsibility to foster a safe place to explore their interests and pursue their dreams. I am most proud of the work I’ve done to help these kids’ dreams come true without compromising their ability to function as healthy humans. I love this work.

There are lots of mental health coaches in this world, but none that focus on kid actors and who is also an actress. Being an actress gives me an intimate look into the world my clients are navigating. It helps to not only develop perspective but to experience it.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe that my vulnerability and willingness to share my experiences give my clients and me a sense of camaraderie. I think it helps to create a non-judgmental, empathetic, and safe space, and I can do that for my clients.
