Life & Work with Annette Capranica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annette Capranica.

Hi Annette, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a large Italian family there were seven of us kids all very close in age and Mom and Dad. There wasn’t always enough money to go around but there was always enough LOVE to go around. I am the middle child of the bunch. I’ve always felt that being the middle child of a large diverse group of siblings gave me and gives me a unique perspective and opportunity to let many perspectives and versions of “right” live peacefully alongside mine.

I always loved putting rhymes together even as a very young child. I once made my Mom a Mother’s Day card on a white folded cloth diaper with markers because we didn’t have construction paper available. She loved it and my rhymes always seemed to make her smile.

Financial difficulties permeated my teen years and beyond and I did not pursue a career in writing but have always loved it and during the COVID lockdown and intense quiet, I began to hear little poems in my head so I began writing them down and sharing. There was so much to focus on that was frightening, negative and uncertain that I wanted to share something light and uplifting and joyful.

Covid lockdown was the first time in my adult life that I had an extended period of “not working” so even though my job was deemed non-essential and the path since Covid has been riddled with obstacles…I still see the ginormous benefit that the whole thing was for me. I actually listened and looked around and remembered why I love California so much. The crazy little squirrels in my yard, my plants, the hummingbirds the full moon, the sunsets, the sky, the ocean, and the wonderful communities it all became the stuff of my poems.

I have so much fun writing these little poems and I dream of one day having a book of my poetry published in a purple velvet-covered tiny book with gold-dipped pages. the title would be “The Poetry of Daily Life”. In my dream, this is a little book that you bring with you on a picnic or date to the beach or under a tree to read out loud to yourself or someone else… just because it’s a beautiful thing to do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would just say in a nutshell that like many people from large families where money is scarce I made decisions about life-based upon needing to survive and fear and lack rather than on what would bring me the greatest joy.

Now, I am starting to understand and listen to those parts of me that wanted to blossom and be heard all along but that did not bring in income. It’s been really satisfying and I hope my little poems make you smile as much as they do me when I write them…

There is another one coming through me right now…lol it’s about me wanting to sit under a tree….and to be continued.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work as a local real estate agent and really enjoy assisting buyers and sellers with kindness and professionalism. I began writing poetry during the COVID lockdown.
