Life & Work with Ana Rodriguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Rodriguez.

Ana Rodriguez

Hi Ana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I remember being in kindergarten, painting under a tree for the first time and I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I grew up on welfare in a low-income/high-crime rate community. I remember being six years old and watching as some gang members killed another gang member. I hid behind a car and watched with horror as the victim bled to death. I loved school so I was lucky enough to receive a full ride to Cal State Long Beach, where I received my BFA. When I graduated in 2006, I went straight to grad school to Otis College of Art and Design, where I was lucky to receive a partial scholarship. Being in Grad school was eye-opening since I was the only minority for my first year there until my second year, where more like me came to the program. I remember reading Theory for the first time and seeing my language barrier. Spanish was my first language, and I realized how far behind I was with my comprehension skills. I lived in my studio most of the time so that I could save on gas money. The experience and people were wonderful and taught me a lot about my education and how it was a luxury for me to be there.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a full-time art teacher in the city of Huntington Park (I also live here). I love what I do, and I love providing a space for students to empower their voices, critique current issues, and dismantle systemic racism. I knew firsthand the importance of Art in High School and how it created a voice for those of us who didn’t speak or knew how to speak our truth.

What matters most to you? Why?
This is a difficult question!!! I want all human beings to live a just and happy life. Where everyone can make their dreams come true, Live their own truth, and help one another with love and respect.
