Life & Work with Amz Amissah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amz Amissah.

Amz, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started when Covid hit and searching for a job became impossible… I soon gave up and decided to create my own job; one where I’m the boss who’s passionate about their products. My obsession with candles has always been extreme so the decision to produce my own from home was one made with complete ease. Aroma by Amz aims to create candles with unique scents and to serve marginalized communities, focusing on individuals as well as organizations. We will hit two years in November and are just ecstatic for what’s to come, good or bad! Managing a business is a lot of hard work and as it’s been hard at times, I try to remember that I want to be an example of success to younger generations, especially those who also identify as trans and black. I want them to know that they can flourish in predominantly white industries while working to rebuild their own communities.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As of now, marketing has been a huge thing to navigate, having had no prior experience. We’ve been utilizing a bunch of resources to learn which methods will work the best for us. We realized months ago that social media ads do not bring profit but what does is the constant raving about our products and by word of mouth. Social media is a powerful tool and I’m very appreciative to my Twitter friends and followers for their constant love and support.

There’s no doubt that more struggles will come along but we will figure it out and succeed in the end.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work at a law firm because I thought some insight into the legal world before joining it would prove to be beneficial; it’s really not (being totally candid). I will be attending law school in Chicago this fall and I am beyond ready for that journey.

If you’re wondering how the business will run, I am thankful to have my mother and sister here to continue production and handle all matters that come through. I will still be overseeing all affairs while running our Instagram and Twitter, respectively.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always enthusiastic about making connections. I never had an issue with making friends throughout my years in school and out. Being raised in an African household, education was a priority so I took school quite seriously… My interests changed continuously throughout the years but my hobbies were reading, listening to music, and walking. Candles and scents didn’t start to interest me until middle school, however.
