Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Theilig.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
While I was studying acting at USC, I stumbled upon my love for photography while snapping headshots for my fellow actors. After a few sessions, it hit me that my true passion was behind the camera. I took more photography classes and found myself drawn to weddings, loving all the beautiful and spontaneous moments they have to offer.
During the same time, I also worked in men’s formal wear, helping clients dress for various special occasions, particularly weddings. One notable company I was affiliated with was located in Beverly Hills, conveniently situated across the street from a renowned wedding photographer. Intrigued by his work, I took the initiative to introduce myself during my lunch break, which ultimately led to my first significant opportunity as his assistant and editor!
After a three-year tenure with my incredible mentor drew to a close, I began to contemplate what lay ahead, when something unexpected unfolded. I had been assigned to shoot an article in the Japanese magazine, Madam Figaro, showcasing a new boutique hotel in Manhattan Beach called Shade. It was there that I had the privilege of meeting the owner, Mike Zislis, who was genuinely impressed by the images I captured. In a surprising turn, he commissioned me not only to photograph his hotel but also HIS wedding! And, shortly after, I became the preferred vendor for all the hotel’s weddings and events. Nearly 20 years have flown by since that pivotal moment, and I have been running my own photography business, forging partnerships with local venues, and thriving in an incredible career ever since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running your own business is rarely a straightforward journey. In my industry, which is closely linked to the economy, downturns often result in fewer bookings. I have faced numerous challenges, including recessions, the impact of COVID-19, and more recently, the landslides at PV that have resulted in the closure of the Wayfarers Chapel. Losing this venue, where I had the privilege of being a preferred vendor for 15 years, has been particularly heartbreaking. We had formed a close-knit community there, and I typically photographed at least 30 weddings each year. The Chapel holds a special place in my heart, as I was also married there in 2012, and it was during that time that I discovered my true love for the Chapel.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I believe several factors distinctly set my business apart.
First and foremost, I limit myself to taking 25-30 weddings each year, allowing me to maintain the high quality and attention to detail that each client deserves.
In addition, we offer incredible video services in tandem with photography. So the couple can have a consistent team and style throughout the whole experience.
Finally, my style has remained largely unchanged over the past 20 years. While trends may come and go, my work is defined by a classic and timeless aesthetic characterized by a passion for natural tones and striking black-and-white imagery that never go out of style.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Being a South Bay native, one of my favorite childhood memories is riding to Cabrillo Beach on my sister’s bike.
I would sit on the handlebars and we would spend the whole day with friends on the beach, listening to music and soaking up the sunshine.
