Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Castro.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, my name is Amy Castro but I go by Amy Fauxx. I am a multimedia artist. I shoot film photography and digital. I started in high school when I became interested in graphics and photography. Every time I’d walk home from school I’d see kids handing out flyers to punk shows and events happening nearby. I started collecting them and became interested in photos and text. Back then social media wasn’t as big as it is now. These flyers are what drew people’s attention to attending an event.
I picked up my first Nikon camera in high school and a Canon A-E1. I became very interested in photo shooting at night and in color. It is just fun picking up the film and seeing the results after. I think taking pictures is all about experimenting and you’ll pick up a style.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had my ups and downs. I love what I do, and would shoot for free sometimes just to keep my portfolio up to date. It is hard finding jobs, especially when you don’t have 5+ years of experience or you’re not part of a union. It’s all about promoting yourself and building connections.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer. I shoot mostly portraits and pictures for social media. I am proud of my work it’s come a long way since I started. I’m now a photo coordinator with ABC and I hope to gain more experience with photos and one day become a photo director or even start my own company. It is all a process and definitely a journey. I am very passionate about what I do, the connections I’ve made, and the inspirations; I appreciate it all.
The way I photoshoot and the color in my photos is what really stand out and draw attention. The beautiful thing about photos is that you capture a moment that someone else did not get to see.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience is key, enjoy the art. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Everyone has a different style. My camera is a part of me, it’s with me at all times. You never know what you’ll come across.
