Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia Rae.
Hi Amelia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
If you asked my mother how I got into music, you’d hear plenty of stories about how I was humming and whistling before I could speak, harmonizing to songs on the radio at age four, and performing at age five. Music has always been a driving energy in my life, but only now do I feel like I’m learning to listen to it instead of boxing it. I started writing music when I was eleven years old but didn’t begin releasing it to the public until my sister and I began collaborating. Between her lyrics and my compositions, we released a 2 EPs, an album, and a few singles along the way. Our goal was to uplift the souls to heard our music, so even our songs that seem to have no meaning will actually prove themselves to be about something like ‘Why it’s important not to engage in gossip’ or ‘How God is our invisible Friend’ (in the songs ‘Matcha Latté’ and ‘Absence’ respectively). Over the past year, I’ve been on a journey of healing which has led me to start listening to the voice I’ve been given and use that to create and connect souls. My songs ‘Pearl Milk Tea’ and ‘Slow Down’ are indicative of the beginnings of that healing journey, and my song out of May 1st, 2024, ‘She’s Coming Alive’ is one of my most prized creations of a woman learning to love the precious parts of herself and her growth, given to her by the Creator.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
All roads are bumpy. I’ve been learning in my music, as well as in every other aspect of my life, how to look for confirmations that I’m going in the right direction. I make some effort, I pray about it, and I allow my Creator to help & guide me along the way. A big struggle I’ve had throughout my journey has been finding my own voice. It was such a beautiful thing to have my sister provide words to bring my melodies to life, but it wasn’t until I studied at Berklee that I felt like I was really about to develop the craft of lyricism. Now, I’m more confident in my ability to express the whisperings of my soul in words! It fills me with joy and contentment.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m sure anyone who listens to my music has a different reason for listening, but I like to think that my vulnerability is a unifying theme across my music, as well as my hope to uplift, not to exclude or put down any person or group of people. I’m not a believer in diss tracks. I don’t blame others for the tests I’ve gone through — they’re all just opportunities to refine my spiritual qualities. I try to express that in my music and through that, encourage others to do the same.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Oh my goodness, there are way too many people who have supported me! I’ve been super blessed. My parents, of course, have supported me in music since day one, encouraged me to study music, apply for music jobs, and more. My sister (with who I do still write), for offering her vulnerability in lyric form for our songs and for spreading our music! The rest of my family and my roommates for putting up with my constant singing, my dearest friends for always coming to my shows and sharing my music, the people who have doubted my capacity for pushing me to learn more about it, my high school teachers and my professors and classmates at Berklee for helping me develop my craft, my amazing band for bringing my music to life at my shows, my guitarist and bestie Takeshi for always being a fun & delightful support and collaborator, and most of all, my Creator, for giving me the gift of life!
