Life & Work with Amber Mike

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Mike.

Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve known I’ve always wanted to be in production. I spent lots of weekends on the set of a very successful syndicated dance show and learned how to direct talent from watching. In 9th grade, I went to a taping of Martin- Kid loves Shanaynay – and officially committed to my dream. I’d interned on record label street teams, interned for a few production companies, worked for an entertainment attorney, did a stint as an administrative assistant for a popular television director and started casting music videos. I got extremely impatient with my climb and quit production, opting to becoming a beautician. About seven months into studying cosmetology, I gained a client who happened to be a casting director for one of the biggest reality shows at the time. She offered me a 3-week job and before it could end, I had another waiting for me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Production isn’t friendly to moms, especially single ones. I navigated single parenthood while growing my career. There were lots of people who were compassionate and it helped because I needed it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a television & digital content executive. I’ve been able to build a production career with credits in reality, video podcasting, development, digital, talk and branded content. Production is a high-pressure, high-volume industry. I’m proud of growing a career with some amazing experiences globally, despite all the lulls, challenges, racism and changes in the business, especially as a black woman.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Content is king! Now, so many people are producing their own content, creating all kinds of opportunities for new approaches for creative ideas. I’m excited for all the newness and opportunities to work with some great people behind and in front of the camera.
