Life & Work with Alyssa Romano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Romano.

Hi Alyssa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Way before I was pursuing makeup artistry professionally, I would do my friend’s makeup for special occasions. Funny thing is I’d never have to volunteer, they would just ask me to glam them up. I guess they could see my talent long before I could.

Years later, I took a one-week pro makeup course in between semesters. From there, I started getting a few clients here and there, but mostly friends and family. I worked about a year at a makeup counter, and this is ultimately what lead me to becoming freelance. I’ve been freelancing for almost four years now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth ride whatsoever. There’s a lot more to being a professional makeup artist than just a makeup application. Even though I’ve been freelancing almost four years, I’m still not at a point where I can rely on only makeup jobs to survive financially. It’s also expensive to maintain a makeup artistry business too. Lot’s of admin work, and you definitely need to have thick skin!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One thing about me as an artist is that I don’t like fitting in categories. My portfolio is all over the place. I like surprising people with what I’ve been up to in the makeup world. I guess what sets me apart from everyone else is that is I’ll always be full of surprises, especially as I continue to grow in my career.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I strive to be a known and respected artist globally. There’s a ton of other talented professionals I’d love to work alongside within my industry as well. I’d also love to expand my artistry by launching my own beauty brand too. The sky is the limit!
