Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Roberts
Hi Alexis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am Alexis Roberts, LA native, dancer, creative and hospitality enthusiast. My dance journey began at various performing arts schools including, 32nd street and Hamilton high school. I attended City of Angeles Ballet Company and Debbie Allen Dance Academy with full scholarships. While training in LA, I worked for a nonprofit ballet company in Compton. In 2013, I got accepted to Alvin Ailey dance school but I couldn’t afford the yearly tuition. Determined to make my dance dreams come true, I moved to New York City anyway. Shortly after moving, I signed with Bloc Talent Agency NYC. I danced professionally for 10 years in New York. I have been thrilled to perform with Beyonce’, Katy Perry, Rosalia, Chayanne, Liam Payne and Ashanti. Hit the stages of the VMA’S, BET AWARDS, and Good Morning America. I have been been featured on TV shows The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Vinyl, and Z: The Beginning of Everything, and Flesh& Bone. I’ve worked with renowned choreographers Ryan Heffington, Charm La’Donna, Maguerite Derricks, Jaquel Knight and Danielle Polanco. Dance also gave me and opportunity to walk in NYFW for KENZO, H&M, Desigual. and booked fashion campaigns with MM La Fluer and Desigual. I moved back to LA to take care of my grandmother in 2023 and continue working with Bloc Talent Agency LA. Artist and the hospitality industry have always had a long standing relationship. After serving and bartending in New York, I developed a deep love for hospitality and creating unforgettable moments through conversations, cocktails and food. January 2024,I launched my private bartending company called ROBERTS. After bartending multiple events, I was inspired to host my own events connecting local creatives and creating community. My first event is launching June 2025, follow @robertshospitality for updates!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been full of ups, downs and unexpected set backs but the love for my craft inspired me to keep pushing. My Mother passed when I was 3 months old and I was raised by my grandmother. My father was addicted to drugs and turned his life around when I was 15 years old. I grew up in a financially stable home but I wasn’t able to afford college tuition which force me to find creative ways to make my dream happen. After diving into the dance industry professionally “the look” & “body image” became a big challenge. I am a naturally slim woman and often times I would be told I was ” too small” or didn’t look “womanly enough” to be booked for certain jobs. I was force to overcome false narratives in the industry and trust in my talents and dreams. Eventually, I booked dream jobs that were perfectly tailored for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am professional dancer that is well trained in multiple styles of dance. Modern, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, African, & House. My vast training allows me to work in many different areas of dance with intention and understanding behind the quality of movement. I am proud that I moved to New York City and worked as a professional dancer. It showed me that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to and gave me the drive to continue my passion in LA. My upbeat personality, resilient work ethic and positive attitude sets me apart from others. I embody an edgy, urban brand of sensuality and creativity.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been a very positive and optimistic child despite my upbringing. Not growing up in a two parent household started my journey of exploration, adventure and discovery. Which fueled my ambition and fearless attitude. I was obsessed with the arts and anything art related. I was always in a dance class, rehearsal, acting class, drawing or listening to music. At a young age, I knew my dreams of becoming a professional dancer would come true. With hard work, I knew dance and the arts would be my way out of South Central, LA.
