Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Sorsa.

Alex Sorsa

Hi Alex, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Being an artist by education, I studied classic painting. But I aways wanted to work with something less academic. And there was no tattoo in this list. I wanted to starts my career in multiplication, illustration or design at worst. But it turned out that in Moscow, where I lived at that time, all these professions were not so well payed. But tattoo industry offered absolutely another income level. So at first it was more of mercenary reasons. But I found myself in a world that offers self -perpetuating potential and I managed to find my place and to develop in this industry. Now, after all these years I know that this decision was one of the smartest in my life and I truly believe that it is the best work in the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This road was really exiting. I started in 2012 and pretty fast i noticed a lot of opportunities that tattoo sphere offered. For example, I spotted that mostly tattoo artists of that time did everything, it was hard to find a narrow-profile specialist. Yes they were working in some style, but the range of themes was wide. I focused on female characters. Some artists asked me how I’m not bored to work with one theme. But it’s my favourite theme, I never got bored of it. Moreover I’m pretty sure that because of that I caught peoples’s attention. At first, my friends from the industry told me that nobody would get tattooed with an unknown woman on himself. But I took risk and refused clients with other themes and ideas. And my perseverance and hard work gave me results.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a tattoo artist and I’m famous for my women characters. That’s what I’m really interested in. Sometimes I do also animals, I like them. But it’s not so inspiring as projects with women characters. I need flora and fauna as secondary elements that helps me to reveal a woman character. But in my arts everything is subject to the main character – a woman. I always loved Art Nouveau style and since I was 13 I new that I want to connect my life creating woman characters and I never had an idea to give up and choose another way. I did everything to reach my goal, so I entered Russian Academic school to learn art. I believe in Art Nouveau concept and I try to take a fresh look at this style, to make it more modern. I playfully call my style Neo New Modern. (In Russia where I’m originally from and in some other Eastern Europe countries we call Art Nouveau style “Modern”) As I already mentioned I’m famous for my women characters and also with my unique technique. I ran my woman characters at the times when nobody did just random women characters. Due to I came to the industry from classic art, I was not under the influence of famous tattoo artists and I had no particular pursuit to replicate artistic and compositional devices of well known tattoo artists, I was ambitious and as soon as I understood the opportunities that tattoo sphere gives you for self realisation, I wanted to bring something new to the industry. For me was vital to create something completely different. And now I see a lot of followers of my style. I feel very proud of contribution I made to tattoo industry. Lots of people tell and write me what influence I have on them and how I helped them to develop. That’s so encouraging when I see how many people are inspired by my case, who created their own style and what heights they are reaching. That makes me feel so proud.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Stay sharp. When you stop drawing and searching new character and artistic devices, your brain starts to degenerate, it’s not so fast anymore and it’s harder to work. When you stop to develop cause you think you reached the top, you are not interesting anymore. That’s why I do my best to draw every day, at list a little, cause I don’t want to loose any ideas that can just drop on you while your brainstorm and to keep myself in check. And it’s vital to experiment. Experiments with techniques and ideas gives you that feeling that you use to have in the beginning, the feeling of something new and exiting. And it helps you to prevent creative burnout.
