Today we’d like to introduce you to Adelaide.
Hi Adelaide, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV which is the city where my love for jazz and music began. I started singing when I was seven. Around that same time, I also started to play piano and guitar. I began my singing journey through a singing group called, “Las Vegas Young Entertainers.” This group led me to such great performing opportunities, from singing at The White House to being on a float through the Veterans Day Parade in New York to our local amphitheater for shows. This was such an amazing group to grow and learn in. I was taught such valuable lessons that I carried with me as I grew older to my next journey in my career.
At around age 12/13, I started to branch out to do more independent performances and gigs. I went on to perform on America’s Got Talent and all around old and new Vegas venues from the South Pointe to the Smith Center where they held cool local shows. One of these shows was called “The Composers Showcase.” This show would present songwriters from all different successes and ages. Here, I was able to showcase songs that I had written and nurture my passion for songwriting. I was usually always the only kid at all of these shows, but I loved it- I had so many mentors all around me. One of my most cherished mentors was the late Bill Fayne. He was a very well-known local Las Vegas musician who truly believed in me. That belief helped me grow into the artist and singer that I am today. He would invite me to perform at shows where you could only perform a song out of The Great American Songbook, which is full of jazz standards. This experience sparked my love and passion for jazz, which I thrive off today.
Throughout the years, I have continued to grow as an artist and individual by constantly pushing out of my comfort zone and trying new things. One of the biggest pushes for me was moving out of Las Vegas and seeing what Southern California has in store for me. It has now been a little over two years of living in California, and it has been one of the best decisions I have made. Living here, I have been able to build such a great foundation of people and connections. I have grown my gig repertoire to all across Southern California and Las Vegas, and I am still working to grow that side of my business even more. More importantly, I have been working on an EP for almost a year and a half now, with a release date of March for the first of the songs. The details of the EP, like the name, are still being worked out. But, more than half of it is finished and is now in the process of being polished off. So, these next few months of my life are go time. I’m also looking forward to finally doing shows in LA again once these songs are out! So much excitement!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been some struggles along the way. One of my biggest obstacles is my anxiety. Growing up, I would experience the worst social and performing anxiety. You’re probably thinking that performing anxiety and being a performer don’t mesh together- and you’re right. They don’t. I would get terrible tremors any time I would perform, which would cause my voice to become unreliable. It would be paralyzing and all-consuming. It would make the idea of performing even for close family friends unbelievably dreadful. But I wasn’t going to let this steer me away from the path I wanted to take. So, I worked really hard on it. Years of therapy and practice later, I have finally got a grasp on my anxiety. I now look forward to performances without fear. I still get nervous for certain performances, but no longer is it an alarming and intense amount of nerves. I am super proud of myself for getting me to this point. Although it is a lot better now, it will always be something that I will need to practice and work on on and off the stage. But that is a challenge I have accepted and made peace with.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an independent artist. I am a singer and songwriter who wants to keep jazz alive. The songs that I am creating are all influenced by jazz/ Bossanova and have a pop twist to them. This is what I want to become known for. I think this idea is what does and will set me apart from others. I have my own unique tone and vibe in the songs I create that I am very proud of. I have honed in on both of those things to become the artist that I envisioned, the artist that I am. I am so proud of the EP I am creating, which is the epitome of what my artistry is and will be. These songs will essentially be the songs that ‘define’ me and I cannot wait for them to be out. I am especially proud of these because of the process it took for me to get to this point in my songwriting career. The songs that I have out now are great but have a completely different vibe and genre from the songs I am creating now, which is okay. I believe they should stay as they reflect my journey throughout the years which is a beautiful thing and art within itself.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family and my friends matter the most to me because they are the ones who are and will always be there for me at the end of every day. They are my home. I will always make time for them as I know they would for me.
