Life & Work with Veronica Luna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Luna.

Hi Veronica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was inspired by someone I could barely view in a back working area every time I walked in this particular grocery store. I could see him icing cakes and I would watch him. I knew that I wanted to design cakes one day. I started at home and eventually grew my clientele. It grew to the point I could not have all these people coming to my home anymore. So I opened a small shop on Adams. I spent every penny I had all my savings to build the shop. Took one year to do so. It was challenging and scary at times not knowing if I would succeed or if my clientele would follow. Spent five years saving money to build the shop sacrificing things I loved. It was very hard word work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I opened the shop the first year, I was working more than I was making. I was exhausted. I was doing most of the work. On the 2nd year, I decided to close the shop although it had great business. The take home money was not enough. I felt I made more at home so I was going to go back. But when my mother passed away she left me a little money and she told me to put it towards my shop one day. She knew that is what I have always wanted a little shop. I could not let her down so I took some time to see what I could do so I could stay and keep the shop. I didn’t spend a year building for nothing. I began managing the pricing, labor. And more. And took some days off. I have stayed and I am very happy with the changes.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have always been very artistic since I can remember I love art. I’m a professional cake designer I can create almost anything into a cake. Not everything but I will take the challenge. I am known for being artistic and creative and understanding people’s requests. I am very proud to be where I am to have such great relationships with so many people. I’m proud to be a memory in their life’s from creating a wedding cake, a funeral cake to an occasion always remembered. What sets me apart I’m honest I’m straight forward very outspoken funny, loud, humorous, respectful and professional.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I trained cake designers for six years some successful. I see where they stand now and everything I taught them. Patience is important in finding the right mentor. I’m self-taught and as I grew, I used the internet for guidance when I needed help with something.
