Life and Work with Tiffany Nguyen DJ Y!KES

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Nguyen DJ Y!KES.

Tiffany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, music has always been my safe haven. I wouldn’t just listen to music, I would feel it.

Around high school is when I really got interested in Djs and mixing music. I’ve always wanted to learn but was too scared to take that first step of the unknown. It wasn’t until my ex broke my heart is when I decided to try something different, so I applied to The Academy of DJs. They’re based in Santa Ana and were accepting the application for their seasonal classes. Coming from zero experience and nothing but love for music, I was genuinely terrified of the unknown. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t of The Academy of DJs. Not only do you learn the skills and technique that you need to, but you also gain a family as well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is all about trial and errors! I’ve had gigs where I did amazing but I’ve also had gigs where there were technical difficulties. For example, there was this one time the DJ after I did not show up. I ended up having to spin for 6 hours at an event. It was exhausting! However, I learned a lot after that. Being a female in a male-dominated industry is tough. You really have to know how to make a name for yourself. Heck, I’m still in the process of bettering myself. And that’s the thing, never be complacent. Stay humble and always strive to do better, be better.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
So, I’m an open format DJ. I can spin for private events, clubs, night markets, lounges, birthday parties etc. I play whichever genre fits the occasion. From EDM to Top 40s and everything in between,
What I’m proud of most, is as I’ve mentioned before, being the few females in the male-dominated industry. There have been moments when a young female child would go up to me while I’m spinning and watch intently. The spark in her eyes and the curiosity beaming over. That is what keeps me going. If I can do it, they can do it too. Nothing is too far out of reach! When the guests see you having fun and enjoying what you do, they’ll have a great time as well!

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
You will always encounter a situation or a set back that you’ll feel is tough to overcome. Remind yourself that god ( whichever one you believe in) will never put you in a situation you can’t overcome. Have a strong heart and a strong head and believe in yourself. It’s a process so trust in it. To succeed you must fail but don’t let that failure ruin who you are as a person.
