Life and Work with Theresa Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Huang.

Raised in Taiwan with a family of four girls, Theresa would have never foreseen such a beautiful career. Her school days were about modesty, strict dress code with neatly cropped hair sans makeup – playing with her mom’s makeup at home alongside her sisters was a creative release. After graduating high school, she began experimenting with beauty products more seriously and was soon taken under the wing of a makeup artist at a local Red Earth counter. Unbeknown to her, the few tricks Theresa learned had quietly ignited a passion and desire to become a beauty magician one day.

Years later, she pursued formal beauty training twice: once in her hometown Taipei and again at Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles, CA. Fused with her Economics degree from the University of California, Irvine, Theresa’s dreams collided as one, and with $1000 she launched Theresa Huang Makeup and Hair Design in 2006.

With a broad background working in both fashion and wedding, Theresa ultimately finds joy when her artistry is combined with her love to build a personal relationship with her clients. This allows her to immediately scan a client’s features and personalize a style vision for her client. At the same time, she insists on maintaining flexibility to stay attuned to the bride’s needs – she focuses on having her clients’ rare beauty shine.

Theresa has been praised for her care for people, her meticulous attention to the tiniest of details, ensuring that her brides glow from the inside out. In 2017, rebranded Theresa Huang Makeup and Hair Design to Kohnur.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey of entrepreneurship is far from smooth. There are so much to learn, from building a website, managing social media, building a team… to bookkeeping. At the same time, I was very fortunate to always have people around me that I can learn from, who care for me and support me through ups and downs. Without them, I would have never make it.

Advice for fellow women: use the things you love to do to serve others (rather than self-serving). One of my favorite saying: “The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.” So, be generous in serving through giving! What you will receive in return will be beyond financial gain.

Also, surround yourself with experts in the areas of knowledge that you’re missing, and who care enough about you enough to tell you the truth even if it hurts.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
When I was 5, my face became badly disfigured. What happened was my sister accidentally pushed me, then I fell hard and hit my left eye against the stainless steel bed frame.

The doctor gave me 28 stitches. Few days after the surgery I saw myself in a mirror which I will never forget — my left eye was swollen like a baseball. My face looked twisted. “I looked like a monster,” I said to myself.

Fast forward 20 years, I’m grateful that my trauma pushed me to become a beauty magician to help other women build confidence!
