Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha McCaskiel.
Tasha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I went into North Carolina A&T undecided, not knowing what I wanted to do as a career. My second semester, I finally declared public relations as my major. I was interested because I always liked writing and speaking, so that’s where my initial interest came from. Once I really began learning what PR was, I fell in love with it. While taking courses, I began PR internships with entertainment companies such as BET, VH1, Comedy Central and more; I was able to gain hands-on experience and see how large conglomerates handle PR. Once gaining years of experience at NCAT and then graduate school at NYU, I felt equipped to create my own company. I began TJMPR in 2016 and have been a full-time entrepreneur since then. Alongside my PR firm, I also put energy into my other passion; which is fashion. I launched my clothing brand ShopTashJMackk earlier this year, and it has been a ball! To reach back while climbing up, I created a networking organization for women of color called Black Girls in Media. We are almost at 1,000 members and have yearly events all over.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Entrepreneurship and smooth roads don’t mix. I have my good days and bad days as I’m sure many can relate. The uncertainty of working for yourself can be stressful, but I know that quitting is never an option, so that’s what keeps me going. Trust the process; the promise is on the other side.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Black Girls in Media, TJMPR, ShopTashjMackk – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
For my PR firm, I have clients from all over, in all types of industries from travel to fashion. I help manage and expand their brand via social and traditional media. I am most proud of my baby, Black Girls in Media. To see the amount of girl power and motivation that happens every day in our chat brightens my heart. I have so much in store for the ladies its so exciting.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe we as women can do it all! From nurturers to leaders we put whatever hat on that we need to. That makes us qualified for anything our hearts desire.
