Today we’d like to introduce you to Starrie Sky.
Starrie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been a writer and artist since I can remember. As a kid, I was always writing plays for my friends and me to perform, and lots and LOTS of stories. I loved drawing different characters for each story, some of which evolved into the book series I write now.
Living in LA for over 15 years, I joined SAG/AFTRA, and played around with acting and modeling… but writing was always my favorite! Working in the entertainment industry allowed me to make my own schedule.
Summer, was always a slow season for acting and modeling. One summer hiatus, in between films, I finally had the time to develop my “tween” series, that I always wanted to write, since I was a kid.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Writing, for me, has always been that “one thing” I click with. I never have a hard time getting my thoughts on paper. I do, of course, get writer’s block from time to time. When that happens, I take a break. Sometimes, it’s a hike in Runyon, and sometimes it’s beach volleyball with friends in Venice!
As a writer, I think it’s important to give yourself time away from writing. I have to remind myself, I don’t need to write an entire book in one day! If I’m not in the mood to finish a chapter or start a new one, I stop.
I’ve learned that creativity can’t be forced. I like to let myself recharge for a bit, then I will designate at least 20 minutes to an hour for writing the next day. If the creativity is flowing, then I will be locked in front of my desktop for hours and won’t even realize!
It’s amazing how giving yourself time to step away from those seemingly overwhelming empty pages, for an afternoon, or a day, actually gets the pen flowing naturally.
Please tell us about Adventures in Cutie Patootie Land book series.
I write and illustrate the published Adventures in Cutie Patootie Land kids fiction series. It is about fashion loving girls from another planet. My readers are mostly “tween” girls around 10-13 years old. I also hand draw all of the series’ artwork with colored pencils. I am a lefty, so that gives a special spin on all of my drawings, haha!
My number one rule for drawing is: There are no straight lines in Cutie Patootie Land!
Who have you been inspired by?
My readers are my inspiration! Being able to connect with them via social media has been such an incredible experience!
Social Media is a great tool for me. I love the Instagram and Twitter platforms. They are excellent for engaging with my readers, both national and international.
