Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Finch.
Hi Shane, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up rapping and I have always been very into hip-hop culture and all that it includes. As I grew older, I also gained interest in Alternative & Indie Rock, as well as a lot of Pop-Punk. Around 2017 I began tracking demos that blended all of those sounds together and I showed them to a teaching colleague, Lisa Pimentel. She introduced me to her family of musicians including Chris Marlette, who helped me turn the songs into something much better. By spring of 2019, with the addition of our current band members, Pinstock was official! Pinstock is – Shane Finch (Vocals / Guitar) – Ricky Inigo (Bass / Vocals) – Danny Rivas (Guitar) – Pat Mannella (Drums).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the hardest parts was finding band members who felt like the right fit. We are a very unique band with a very unique sound, and we also hold everything we release to a high standard. Because of this, it was difficult to find people who were talented enough to pull it off while also having a genuine interest in what we were attempting to do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Pinstock is an Alternative Rock band that also blends elements of Hip-Hop and Pop-Punk. I am most proud of the amazing songs we have already recorded as well as who we have worked with. As an elementary school teacher at a private school in North Hollywood, we have a lot of privileged connections that most bands of our status do not have. This allows us to record with well-known producers like Bob Marlette (Ozzy Osbourne, Tracy Chapman, Atreyu). We also work with some pop-punk veterans like Mike Jimenez (Rufio) for our songs that we want to have the classic raw, punk sound. I think what sets us apart is that I grew up rapping and didn’t really get into alt-rock culture until older. So I have noticed the way I speak to our audience and run our shows and even write my lyrics is through a more street, urban lens than most of the bands we play with. People have a difficult time thinking of who we sound like, they just know they like it.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We are eternally grateful for our friend/colleague/producer Lisa Pimentel of No Small Children! She is 100% responsible for keeping me motivated to follow my dreams as a musician and for helping me realize it is okay to make things that are a bit outside of the box like this band is. She is one the smartest, most talented, hardest working people I’ve ever met and without her, there is no Pinstock. Also, major credit goes to Chris Marlette who helped establish the foundation of what would be Pinstock’s sound. Chris co-wrote and produced our first EP, Stuff Like That, back when I was still looking for the right band members.
