Life and Work with Selena Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Selena Hughes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Selena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My digital journey started at Macaroni Kid Beverly Hills/Hollywood where I was the publisher/editor for a weekly family newsletter covering family entertainment in and around Hollywood/LA. I also have a degree in Journalism (Advertising.) After five years, it was time to take a personal flight. As I saw the industry changing, I knew I needed to grow with it. This led me to http://selenahughes.comselenahughes.com.

I’m still covering family, but am able to dig deeper into the city of LA. It’s an incredible city overflowing with mind-blowing people from all over the world.

I would say what got me here today is being consistent. If you take the job, then do it and do your best. That’s all any of us can do.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, it has not been a smooth road! But for me, a smooth road would have been boring. I’ve learned that I sometimes need a challenge. Iron sharpens Iron!

Some struggles that I’ve faced along the way is staying flexible with the movement of the blogger industry. It’s fairly new so “rules” are constantly changing. From the creative side it’s GOLD, but from the business end, there is a constant shift. Not all bad, but shifts that you shouldn’t ignore.

Blogging is still fighting for its respect and that brings along challenges, especially when it comes to monetization. Not everyone understands that lots of bloggers work really hard and are creative salespeople. It is the business of advertising, it’s an extension of it and it’s so powerful in how we do business today. Business owners should compensate the professionals as long as the work is done.

As with most entrepreneurs, the reality of self-motivation is real. Staying positive in the eye of the storm takes great effort and every day or week is not a win. Keeping on, keeping on. Learn from the mistake, celebrate the smallest victories and that gets you one step closer every time!

Please tell us about SelenaHughes.com.
My business cards read Digital Content Creator/Entrepreneur because I have expanded past a newsletter. I still offer the basics of blogging like a blog post and social media post but have now added promotional videos and videography to my services. This service can cover any industry, product or event and is a great option to offer to clients.

I specialize in family entertainment, LA Community (including restaurant openings, hotels, philanthropy, business opening, special events and more), red carpet coverage for local events and freelance event coverage and copywriting/editing.

I am most known for coverage of family entertainment around town with my two sons.

I am most proud that most of the ideas come from me and I am enjoying bringing them to life and the fact that my sons get to come to work with me.

I feel like what sets me apart from others is I welcome diversity.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I am an avid user of Google Calander! Planning is a huge part of ensuring that I get anything done. The podcast that I enjoy are Toure Show, The Art of Charm and The School of Greatness. Music is always my top go to, I love SoundCloud, Spot, fy and KCRW.
