Life and Work with Sebastian Jimenez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Jimenez.

Sebastian, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a guitarist, composer and artist living in Los Angeles. I started playing the guitar at age 13 and was very influenced by blues and classic rock. Nowadays, I can be found playing different genres of music in places like the famous Whiskey Go Go, theaters like the Dolby Theater and arenas like the Forum.

In 2017, I performed the song “Mas Buena” at the Latin American Music Awards with Gloria Trevi and Alejandra Guzman being the main guitarist of the show. In 2019 I shared the stage as a special guest with the popular Mexican band Maná at the acclaimed Forum Arena.

I’m recognized and admired for my incredible stage presence and talent with the instrument. I have always demonstrated and transmitted my energy and passion both through live performances and in recording sessions that attracts the attention of the audience that appreciates me.

In 2015, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my studies at “Los Angeles College of Music” where I obtained a degree in music specializing in guitar performance, at the same time I produced and mastered my music that helped me get a place in the industry. I recorded in the “Beautiful Blue” EP of Kairvina, mastered the EP “Eat the World” of his main band High Society Homeless and has recorded with Hgroove on some of his songs such as “Que Pasa” and “Amazing Life”.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been rough. The live scene in LA has changed so much since the 80’s. Before you would see the sunset strip full of people lining up to go into the venues and now there is hardly anyone there. That has made the venues turn into this pay to play business model that it’s not good for the bands and artists. My advice would be to be consistent with what you are doing. Don’t stop and you would be able to get great opportunities. I can say this from my experience playing at the Forum.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
The thing that I’m most proud of is playing with Maná at the in front of 16,000 people at the Forum. It was an insane experience. I was the bands special guest. Speaking about performances, another great achievement was playing with Gloria Trevi and Alejandra at the 2017 Latin American Music Awards that happens at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. I’m a producer, performer and composer. So I record and produce bands, perform live shows and write music.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
For me woman have a lot of opportunities in the music industry. I love how women write, they have a very unique touch and they get very creative all the time. I’ve also seen a lot of female singers and instrumentalists that are great in this industry. One of my mentors is the guitarist of Jason Mraz and everyone loves her.
