Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxana Delgado.
Roxana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Like many girls, I have always had an obsession with beauty and makeup. About 4 years ago, in 2014, I decided to take the plunge and get certified as a makeup artist. It was the scariest but the best decision I ever made!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was definitely not a smooth road. The day before my final, I got into a horrible car accident and ended up in trauma ER but that did not stop me! I was so determined to succeed in my passion, I sucked it up and showed up the next morning and got certified. After that things did not get any easier, but with a positive attitude and a lot of hard work, everything started palling right into place.
Please tell us about your business.
I am now a freelance makeup artist. I travel and also take clients at The Vanity Box Cosmetics in Downey. I specialize in natural elegant glam makeup. I am known for creating looks that look like you are not wearing heavy foundation and give a natural contour and glow effect. I take a lot of pride in my work and it makes me feel so good when a client looks at themselves and feel even more confident than when they first sit in my chair.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
A great way to find a mentor is asking to assist a makeup artist. Not only do you experience events first had but it’s a great way to learn new techniques. I have assisted makeup artist to just clean brushes in between clients and have learned so much.
