Life & Work with Pearl Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pearl Lopez.

Hi Pearl, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story began about four years ago, the summer of 2016. I was newly engaged and in the early stages of planning my wedding. Pinterest had inspired me to DIY as much of the wedding as I could. Together, my aunt and I purchased “How To Brush Letter” workbooks and spent our free time learning a new hobby that would help us DIY everything that we possibly could for my wedding. We did the invites, invitation addressing, seating chart, table numbers for centerpieces, and all of the little quotes and saying that you would normally see sprinkled all throughout a wedding.

Together my aunt and I decided to turn our newest hobby into a small business that we would name Petal Pens Lettering. We would go on to then create customized items and decor, wedding/ party invites for friends, family, co-workers and other people who were interested. We participated in local holiday boutiques to get our name and business out there and known. This past summer, we decided to branch off into our own Instagram accounts that would allow us to really personalize our own businesses. For me, a lot had changed since first starting a small business back in 2016. I was now married to my childhood sweetheart and a mom to two babies! I really wanted a business name that would reflect my new stage in life. Thus, Creations By Mommee was born! I decided to incorporate two E’s at the end of “Mommee” to represent the initials of my two children; Elliott and Everly.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some small bumps in the road. My children are still very young and require A LOT of my attention. I work on all my pending orders primarily during nap time and/or after they are both sound asleep for the night. This routine can be tiresome because I am not always guaranteed a specific set of hours to work, but one of the perks of running my own business is the freedom of working when my schedule allows it. For me, I find that I work best at night time when the house is quiet and I can truly focus all my energy on creating.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Learning how to create custom doormats was definitely something I knew I wanted to perfect and make one of my specialties. A couple of months back, a good friend of mine asked me to create a specific doormat for her. It was through word of mouth and social media that the design took off and instantly became my best selling custom doormat! The doormat design grew so much attention, so it was trial and error figuring out how to constantly and consistently recreate it while still adding the personalization element for each customer that ordered. I’m proud to say that it didn’t take long before I had a system down and was hand painting multiple doormats a night.

In the beginning, I was solely taking orders and operating through my Instagram account but it wasn’t long after that, that I decided to open up a website that would help me track all incoming and outgoing orders. Aside from creating doormats, some of my other work includes creating invitations, signs and with the upcoming holiday; ornaments! Some of my favorite orders to work on have to be those that are wedding-related, I absolutely love and enjoy creating engagement announcements, wedding invitations, and even seating charts!

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
One risk that I have taken would have to be branching off on my own after being business partners with my aunt for over three years. Creating my own business meant starting all over again with a whole new Instagram, and possibly even a new following. I am so blessed to have friends and family who are continuously supporting me and my new small business. The excitement and encouragement from those around me calmed my nerves and allowed me to embrace the transition! I am so excited for Creations By Mommee; for what it is and what it is yet to become!
