Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole DuBois.
Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got started with performance art at a young age. When I was little, all I wanted to do was be on stage and I had wonderful, supportive parents that gave me every opportunity to do that. I was in dance class, singing lessons, acting lessons, I did the school plays, theatre camps- the whole shebang. In high school, I discovered improv comedy and fell deep into that weird hole, where I still reside. The quick version that got me to 2019: Spend a year and a half in NYC at The Professional Children’s School acting, dancing and learning how hard it is to be a real actor. Decided to go to business school on a whim and ended up at LMU in Los Angles. I was on the improv team at LMU, got involved in a lot of student films and started studying at The Groundlings. After graduation, I decided to stay in LA and dive head first into a life of acting and comedy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road, but that’s pretty standard for an artist. I basically signed up to get the shit kicked out of me when I decide to be an actor. But then, you get one win and the high is so high, you forget about all the negative it took to get there. It’s exciting to be working towards a dream.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is not to take rejection personally. I was 17 when I got to NYC and started auditioning and it was a huge shock to the system. I hadn’t learned not to internalize everything people said yet and was taking other peoples opinions as fact. I learned I wasn’t good at drama, my boobs were too big to ever get cast, I couldn’t sing, I had untrustworthy eyes so I could never do commercials, I was both too skinny and too fat, I didn’t have the “look” for comedy, etc. NONE OF THAT WAS TRUE. I had to learn to let all the stuff go and be confident in my own abilities.
My advice would be to find your people. Find your friends, teachers, and mentors that believe in you, and truly have your best interest in mind and just listen to them. Tune everyone else out.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
A film that I am the lead female in is now on Showtime and Hulu! It’s called Debunkers Inc. It’s a fun family comedy.
You can catch me on season 5 ep.1 of FX’s You’re The Worst, playing Princess Di.
I play Harley Quinn on Just Giggle It’s Youtube series Harley Quinn and the Joker vs. The Real World. They’re about to release episode 6!
I perform sketch comedy around LA. I recently produced a sketch show called Morepine Middle School’s Got Talent on the Comedy Central Stage, which was so much fun!
I perform with an all-female improv troop called My Aunt Maureen.
I am still a student at The Groundlings. I am waiting to take advance writing lab.
I love playing crazy, offbeat characters. I post a lot of my character and sketch work on my YouTube channel: Youtube.com/NicoleDuBois
I also write and produce my own weird content. You can see the first two episodes of my web series S O C I A L on my YouTube channel.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I’ve been listening to the Hollywood Reporters podcast Awards Chatter with Scott Feinberg. It’s cool to listen to interviews with actors that I look up to and hear the story of how they got to where they’re at.
I LOVE Amy Poehler, and part of that is because I was so inspired by her book Yes Please.
