Life & Work with Megan Stewart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Stewart.

Megan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The pandemic created a difficult time for many people, myself included. I was stressed out, lacked any creative drive, and was stir crazy from the lockdowns and quarantines. I wanted to find a way to get back to who I was before this mess started. As a writer at heart, I had tried to find inspiration in prompts I found in my online communities, I tried to get inspired by the people and things around me, but nothing seemed to work. I wanted to find something that could reignite my spark and my passion for writing, which prompted me to research different subscription box companies. I’ve used ones for makeup and books, why not one for writing? After a month of trying to find what I was looking for, I came across one company, and I mean ONLY one company that offered something even a little close to what I wanted.

However, it was geared towards writers that were already established and looking to get published. I wanted to find something that was more personal and focused on helping writers get their groove back–and keep it. It was because of this that I decided to launch my own company. I did months of market research to see if it was viable. Were there other people out there like me that wanted to have a creative outlet but lacked the inspiration? Were there writers out there who wanted to focus more on the craft and less on the publishing prospects? Were there others out there who just wanted to be part of a community of like-minded individuals to share their works, triumphs, failures, and more? I started to see that there was, and it prompted me to think seriously on what I wanted to bring to the market. What could I create that would not only be viable but cost-effective to put together and actually be useful? This is how Write Now Box was developed. We are in the initial stages, having just launched in the beginning of November, but the reception we’ve received has been invaluable and confirms we’re on the right path.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Creating a box company sounds like it would be easy, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Not only do you have to source the products in the boxes (if you’re not creating them), you have to pay for quite a bit upfront. The unseen cost was the biggest hurdle I’ve faced when putting this all together. From shipping and packing materials to extra little details and touches to the physical items going in each box, it’s been a journey for sure. But it’s also been so rewarding. I know I could have went in a different, more affordable direction for the first iteration, but I wanted to create an experience and not just another package of writing goodies to hand out. I wanted it to be more than that.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve always been a writer, and have been published in literary magazines, and have been a journalist for the better part of my working life. The draw to this form of creative outlet has always been with me, but in the past few years, as I’ve been building another business, I’ve let it fall to the wayside. Picking it back up has been difficult. But through building this new company, Write Now Box, I’m putting writers and their passion first. What started out as an idea for a writer subscription box soon turned into something more. Now, not only are we offering monthly themed boxes for writers to enjoy and be inspired by, but also a full e-commerce store, a community to engage with, monthly writing contests, and more. I am so proud that I’ve been able to flesh out my initial idea and turn it into a business that has the potential for long-term success and the ability to help writers and other creatives in a number of ways. This isn’t a box to help you get published — it’s a curated experience to help you better your writing, reignite your creativity, and inspire you long term.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would be the summers I spent at my family’s lake house in Pennsylvania. Being from Orange County, there weren’t that many opportunities to experience nature like that. We could walk outside onto the deck of our cabin and watch the sunrise and set over the lake, we could hike through the woods all around the house, and I learned to fish right off the dock outside the house. It was a magical time to be sure, and something that I’ll always cherish. It’s even found its way into my work. I’ve written a number of short stories and poems that center on this specific place, as it’s made a profound impact on my life. When I’m there, it’s like I’m reliving all those amazing memories, and I can’t help but be inspired to write.
