Life and Work with Kyra Fields

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Fields.

Kyra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Honestly, I’ve been in love with music and singing ever since I can remember! Even when I was about four years old, I would put on shows for my family and make them pay money to watch me, hahaha. I think I always knew that music was the thing I loved the most and really wanted to do in my life. My first show ever was when I was six years old for a recital at my temple and I remember being so so nervous, but it was such an important moment for me and I’ll never forget it. Growing up, I would sing anything and everything and I’m pretty sure my brother and sister wanted to kill me with how much noise came from my room at all times. It could’ve been midnight, but seven years old me would still be screaming Beautiful by Christina Aguilera through the house like a psychopath. Through elementary school, I would sing in every single play, and I freaked out when I got to play Ariel in the little mermaid in 4th grade. That’s footage I wouldn’t want to watch though, hahaha. Such an awkward time. Anyways, I feel like the most pivotal time for me in all of this was when I met the guys in my band when I was 11 or 12. I got a call from the managers of the band, Audrey and Muddy, saying that they wanted me to come in and audition for the lead singer role. I don’t even know how they found me really, but I think that was the best thing that’s happened to me. Because of that first day walking into Amp for the first time, all awkwardly and 12 and stuff, I’ve met so many amazing people that I love and I get to play the music that I love all the time. I’m so beyond grateful for what I have right now and I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. My music and the people around me have made me the happiest I’ve ever been and all I want in my life is to keep making and playing music forever.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think that a lot of the challenges that I’ve dealt with in my 16 years of living are probably similar to what a lot of other girls my age are dealing with, or any age really. I think one thing that I’ve had to work on is confidence within myself, and being okay with not being perfect at everything all the time. I know that I am way too in my head a lot of the time and I’m a ball of anxiety too often, but that’s something that I’m definitely getting better at and working on. I think that high school especially can be a hard time on girls my age because everybody is dealing with the stuff of their own and are the most judgemental for no reason where I’m at right now. But what I think is the most important thing to keep in mind, at any age or point in life really, is to be understanding of what people are really going through when they take out their stuff on you. Everybody has their own insecurities and jealousies, but what’s really helped me through those moments truly is empathy. I know it’s cheesy, but the truth is nobody can hurt you unless you let them. Being the most honest and vulnerable version of yourself is what I think is the most important thing. I know it can be hard to really be the truth, especially in high school when it seems like everybody loves to spread opinions about everything, but you just can’t let it get under your skin.

As an example for me recently, I bleached my hair platinum blonde about a month ago, almost white really. Let me just tell you, high school kids really don’t hold back hahaha. I’ve been told to my face that I looked way better before and asked why I did it multiple times. I think that if I dyed my hair a year ago and got some of the reactions I did back then, it would have affected me a lot more, but I’ve grown a lot within the past year. I’ve learned so much from the strong women around me like my mom and my sister and they inspire me always to be compassionate and be comfortable with myself every day. I go to school looking like a hot mess every day, honestly: pajama pants, huge sweatshirt, and uggs from when I was like 10. The point is, I know it’s hard to “not care” what people say, but it’s not always about “not caring”. It’s about understanding where it comes from. Is it coming from a place of love? Hurt? Jealousy? Whatever it is, the important thing is that it doesn’t change you. Just because somebody else wants to hurt you, doesn’t mean you have to turn that hurt around onto somebody else. Everybody’s going through it. Feel things. It’s ok! Just don’t let it take over you. ❤️

Please tell us about your work.
I sing and write songs all day, every day. I love all kinds of music, so I just try to tell the truth of whatever I feel within my moody teenage self. I think I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown over the past few years, and the stuff that I’m working on right now, I could pee. I’m hoping to start releasing stuff soon!!

Are there any apps, books or podcasts that help you do your best in life?
I don’t know why I listen to so many podcasts, but I do. I looove to listen to the comedy podcasts on Spotify like during PE class or when I’m going to sleep. I can’t sleep without a good podcast these days and I think I have a problem, haha. I feel like that’s something that 40-year-olds do? Anyways, my favorite app is definitely Spotify because it has everything I need. Music and podcasts. Instagram and Snapchat are cool too though for sending stupid videos I find to people who didn’t ask for them. I know that this has nothing do to with the question, but I thought you guys should know I’m writing this on my death bed with ice packs covering my face because I had my wisdom teeth surgery yesterday. I’m thriving.
