Life and Work with Katrina Centeno-Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Centeno-Nguyen.

Katrina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
To be completely honest, I never thought that my everyday handwriting would set me on the path where I am today. When a friend saw me writing a grocery list one day and asked me to address her wedding envelopes, I thought it would be a good idea to earn extra money as a means to help pay for school. With a mere ten dollars, I bought a few envelopes and a couple of nicer gel pens. From there, I started receiving inquiries from the simple photos I took. This was over 11 years ago and we now have our own merchandise line and rental division!

Has it been a smooth road?
There is no such thing as a smooth road and even now, with many years in, we still face challenges. I feel that they just change as our company continues to grow over time, but we have challenges nonetheless. The artistry is constantly evolving but it is not the problem, only the learning process. Most people don’t realize that the logistical side of the business has been the roller coaster ride. As someone who is a workaholic, maintaining personal time is also a struggle.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Calligraphy Katrina – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Since 2007, we have been one of the pioneers of lettering on mixed mediums and mirrors. We are proud that we have grown exponentially well before the rise of social media and we continue to use the platform to elevate our artistry, marketing, and engagement with clients, fans, colleagues, and fellow artists alike. We are able to inspire other writers and artists to follow in our footsteps.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Growing up, I was lucky to never think that I would have to choose between a personal life and a work life. The balancing act is a sport, and there will be times you have to choose between personal and professional needs. I would be lying if I said it’s not difficult because it is. But when you see the fruits of your labor, it is the most satisfying achievement you could ever be grateful for.
