Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Deena C. Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2016, I underwent a lifestyle and career shift. After over 20 years as an educator, I knew that my purpose and passion no longer aligned with my profession. It was time to shift because I could no longer pivot around situations and circumstances that were killing me from the inside out. Following a less than amicable divorce and exiting toxic working conditions, I relocated to my home state of California and officially started my own consulting company. I decided to utilize my 20+ years as an educator and school administrator to help individuals and teams develop the ability to communicate, connect, and collaborate at a world-class level.
I knew I had to DO something after identifying a significant deficit of women in key leadership roles and a common thread of stress, anxiety, and depression. These women had stories that were similar to mine and I learned that there is HOPE in the midst of hopelessness when you embrace the journey and walk in Truth. I began to coach women to own their truth and lead from an authentic space. Noting that my work with women was more than a singular event but a strategic movement, I founded The Leadhershift Movement. The Leadhershift Movement is designed to help women shift the way they think about themselves as women and how they develop and respond as leaders. The Leadhershift Movement provides a safe-space for professional women to get clear about their Why, confident about the What, and consistent about the How.
The Leadhershift Movement helps high-performing women communicate with influence, lead with confidence, connect with authenticity while collaborating strategically. I knew first-hand that when you embrace a growth mindset it results in optimal career growth.
My journey to becoming a dynamic motivational speaker, life coach, radio/tv personality. and catalyst for change was truly a manifestation of my calling. My purpose in life is to inspire, empower, and transform lives, how I do it may change but it is the core of my being.
Now, I add value to others speaking on the powerful message of authentic leadership.
My latest gift to the cause is my book Walking Through Glass: The Ultimate Guide to be Sane, Sexy, and Significant in a Male-Dominated World. The book deconstructs the myths surrounding women leaders by providing key strategies and actionable ideas on HOW to “walk through the glass” (fear, doubt, anxiety, depression) Sane and Sexy, all while cultivating a legacy of Significance as a WOMAN.
I love supporting women and empowering them to WALK in their truth; whatever that truth is for them.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been paved with trials and tribulations. I was harassed and intimated for doing my job and then second-guessed when I wanted to leave a 20+ year career and pursue my purpose with a passion. Add divorce and being a single mom to a teenager to the equation while starting from scratch with very little money and bruised ego to the pot and you have a recipe for disaster.
I would tell young women to embrace the journey. Seize every opportunity to grow into a better version of you. The road is not going to be easy and you may not understand “The Why” but always remember you are a daughter of a King and God has already ordered your steps. When you are obedient, the journey will be easier, when you are not in alignment with your purpose, the road will be more difficult but at the end of the day… God will get you covered. There are many ways to impact the world and your calling is to inspire, empower, and transform lives how you do it may change but the end result will still be explosive.
Young women should know they do not have to compromise who they are as women to be extraordinary leaders. When women are clear about who they are they can be confident about their leadership and consistent about how they show up magic happens. I want women to know that is okay to not be okay – growth is a process. We must #embracethejourney and script our own narrative. We truly are stronger together and it is time to stop hiding behind the facade of superwoman.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Leadhershift Movement – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The Leadhershift Movement is in launch mode. My podcast Walking Through Glass: The Podcast is an opportunity to have conscious conversations to help our sisters make the shift to a clearer, confident, and consistent existence. The exclusive Leadhershift Mastermind is a specially curated one-year program for female entrepreneurs, C-Level executives, and government leaders. Most importantly, I will continue to Inspire, Empower, and Transform lives.
I possess a trademark direct yet relatable style and share in an engaging and high energy way, practical steps to help female leaders lead with clarity, speak with confidence, and operate with consistency. My expertise helps individuals and organizations build a clear path to the significance that bridges their philosophy, vision, mission, and goals to their optimal organizational identity.
I am so proud of the safe space I have created for women of all ages and professions to have conscious conversations about the real stuff we deal with every day as women, wives, mothers, sisters, and friends. However, my unique gift is being a M.O.M. = Mentor, Optimizer, and Monetizer for entrepreneurs. Once I pull back the layers with a client, we can set an optimal strategy for personal, professional, and business growth. What sets me apart is that I am concrete abstract so although I think outside-the-box, I am able to creatively scaffold the idea into bite-size actionable steps to achieve the big picture.
Who have you been inspired by?
Janice Bryant-Howroyd has been inspirational because she is the first African American woman to build and own a billion dollar company while simultaneous being a wife, mother, mentor, catalyst for change, and philanthropist. Janice is very humble and brilliant.
Dr. Betty Uribe is another woman who has inspired me greatly. Dr. Uribe is a value-based leader and truly walks the talk.
My mother has been inspirational throughout my life. Although my mother was an only child she gave birth to nine children. My mother taught us to never let others define who we are. I hold to her earnest words that if you allow others to “make” you angry then you have given away your power. The same power you give away is the same power you can take back.
