Today we’d like to introduce you to Domini Carrington.
Hi Domini, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Southern California and was fortunate enough to grow up on property that grew delicious produce and glorious, blooming flowers. As such, the love of all things botanical became ingrained in my understanding of the world around me. After leaving a corporate desk job for one in a flower shop, I soon realized that I had found my calling. After a couple of years of working for somebody else, I went out on my own and set up a floral studio out of my home in Santa Monica. Shortly after that, I began growing roses on over an acre of land in Calabasas that would then be sold to local florists and used in my own designs and weekly home-floristing.
Throughout my 30+ years of experience in the flower industry, I’ve been able to grow a loyal client base that I have an effortless relationship with and take pride in making people’s houses their homes. Up until recently, I was focused largely on growing my floral business. But shortly after the passing of my beloved mother, I was inspired to honor her memory in the best way I knew how— by teaming up with my sister and best friend and sharing her infamous and well-loved breadsticks with the community. Since they were so well received among local caterers, we began packaging them and stocking them at local cheese and wine shops in the area. I’d like to think that both of my businesses share an ethos of community building and a focus on home-grown love.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’d say that my journey has been smooth for the most part, save for the expected ups and downs that come naturally with life and starting any business. Of course competition with corporate-funded florist outfits has always been a looming threat, but I’ve built a network of truly lovely families that I work with consistently. If I had to give advice to someone starting their own business venture, it would be “it takes a village—accept that help graciously.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a florist, I’d say that I am known for my organic and natural approach to providing beautiful florals. My work tends to gravitate towards a clientele that enjoys the beauty of a lush English or French countryside garden. As such, I lean more heavily into freshly grown garden varieties as opposed to imported tropicals—although I am always excited to accommodate and collaborate with new visions as well as my own preferred aesthetic. My ability to have a home studio sets me apart from brick and mortar florists in that I am able to keep my overhead low and provide down to earth pricing for my clients—something I’m so often complimented on considering the landscape of what’s offered in Los Angeles.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I always hold quality and honesty in the highest regard and find that my clients appreciate and continue to work with me for such reasons. Act with love and you shall receive the same.
