Life and Work with Chloe May

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe May.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chloe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been told the phrase, “When you know, you know.” That is a phrase I have been living by my entire life. Ever since I was big enough to hold a camera, the art of visual storytelling has been my fascination. I was constantly creating when I was a kid, whether it be capturing photos to making videos to writing short stories. I even created my own talk show, “The Chloe May Show,” where I would report on local stories and highlights that I found interesting. I discovered a strong love for speaking on camera and showcasing my personality through video. When I was twelve, I started my own YouTube channel, which I considered to be the perfect creative outlet to express my creativity and passion for storytelling with the rest of the world. I posted skits, video blogs, news stories, music covers, advice videos and more. To this day, it has attracted over 19,000 subscribers to this day, all of whom are extremely supportive. Making videos for the past eight years has allowed me to explore my enthusiasm to entertain, specifically through a digital media platform. It has not only strengthened my pre and post-production skills, but has also made me a more hardworking, confident, and creative individual. Most notably, it solidified my passion for storytelling and content creation, which I continue to pursue in my daily endeavors. Thinking back, I realized that I wouldn’t have discovered my true passion for content creation if I didn’t push myself and believe in my talents. When I knew, I knew. And I wouldn’t stop until I succeeded.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing that is worth the journey is easy. Growing up, I was a really shy kid and struggled with self-expression and confidence. I never felt like I fit in with the rest of the students in my middle school or high school. I wasn’t good at sports, I wasn’t inherently book smart and I didn’t know how to express myself in a way that made me happy. When I discovered photography and videography, I finally felt a connection to something. Being creative and artistic gave me an indescribable sense of happiness and belongingness. When I was speaking on camera, I felt like I could be myself without fear of judgment. I felt confident and secure in who I was. This is when I knew I wanted to dedicate my time to create. I spent countless hours filming, writing, and editing videos. Instead of being social in high school and going out with friends, I would sit in my room alone and film videos for my YouTube channel. Since I didn’t have any friends who had the same interest as me, I was responsible for the pre and post-production of all of my content. I had to teach myself how to operate a camera, write a script, use editing software, create graphics and more. Doing everything myself was extremely difficult but because I loved it so much, it was beyond worth it. Those skills that I taught myself still apply to the content I create today, and I don’t regret it one bit. If you know that you love to do something, take the time to understand and become an expert in whatever it may be. Even if it means choosing it over spending time with your friends, I promise you it will be worth it. It will make you that much stronger and experienced. The concept of becoming an on-camera talent and developing a dedicated following on social media is often absurd to people. When I told people that was my dream growing up, they rolled their eyes and thought I was crazy. The best decision I’ve ever made was not letting those comments get to me. Instead, I trusted my gut and worked even harder. In my opinion, the key to success is believing in yourself and your talents. It is all about mindset. Live with purpose and a positive attitude, and you will be able to accomplish anything.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women are incredible creatures. We are smart, kind, gentle, independent, and innovative thinkers. I think it’s absolutely essential to have a woman in power at any and every business or organization. We are able to solve situations with such grace and sensibility that a lot of men aren’t capable of. We are also able to relate and connect with others on a deeper level that is extremely beneficial in any situation or opportunity that involves teamwork. I am so luck to have been surrounded by such inspiring and strong women growing up who have taught me that women have the power to move mountains and shake the world. I believe that any position a woman wants to pursue is possible with persistence, confidence, and grace. Don’t let anyone tell you that your dreams are too big. Go out and get what you want because you can.
