Life & Work with Bryan Tanner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Tanner.

Hi Bryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started screen printing back in 2009. I picked up the craft because I wanted to cut out the middle man and also, I thought it would be cool just have a trade under my sleeve. Never knowing it would’ve take me where I’m at today. I started out in shack in Bellflower, CA. No electricity. Me and my cousin have extension cords from the main building to our shack in the back where I perfected my craft.

Fast forward…within a year my business grew to the point where I knew I had to get something more substantial. At the time, I moved in Gardena and would frequent Downtown Los Angels because that’s where all the stores were to purchase the materials needed to keep my screen printing business up and running. So I started to search for open studio/warehouses. I needed a home for my location. Something I could call home. Luckily I found my current location where I have been for a year. I managed to team up with a guy who cut n sews. So now, not only do I offer screen printing I know offer cut n sew to anyone who looking for the service. All in all (if your reading this) believe in yourself and trust the process. Never take what isn’t yours (not a penny less or penny higher) do good business & never short cut. Oh! And learn to love to fail. You’ll never know what you are capable of doing if you don’t. Constantly challenge yourself. I promise you’ll love the outcome.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first year of owning any business is hard. The best thing you can do is always tell yourself your “why” as in why you are doing this. That’s what got me motivated everyday to get up and go to work! For me, my why was NEVER going back and clocking in for anyone. I wanted to be the boss. So that motivated me to get up every morning and grind and connect with new people in my industry.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional screen-printer. I specialize in discharge print. Water base, 3D puff print. You name it, I can do it. For me, I’m most proud of overcoming my fear and risking it all. I’m glad I did it. It boosted my self-esteem. And also taught me to push myself. My work ethic sets me apart. Owing my own business taught me not to rely on anyone but myself. If I don’t do it, no one will! And that’s facts for anyone.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
WORK YOUR BUTT OFF. My favorite quote from Jay Z reads, “had to hustle, my back to the wall, ashy knuckles Pockets filled with a lotta lint, not a cent”! I would quote this line every time I felt like I wanted to give up! It kept me balanced knowing that on the side of fear was everything I ever wanted!
