Life & Work with Alexis James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis James.

Alexis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved to LA while attending school at Boston University. I came to LA kind of unsure about what I wanted to do but I was luckily blessed to be in a place with a thousand opportunities. I landed my first internship at Live Nation and my first job was at a talent agency in Los Angeles. While working at the agency, I found myself loving working behind the scenes in music but there was always something missing. I left my position there to work for my hometown music hero, Kanye West. Being a part of the Sunday Service Choir completely changed my life. I dreamed of singing full time but told myself I was not good enough to make it, but I did. It gave me the confidence to step out on my own. Watching Kanye West and our talented music team create and work was very inspiring and taught me a lot about artistry. I felt so blessed to work with so many of my favorite singers and musicians.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. It was a struggle for me to decide to pursue music full-time. I was doing well in my previous positions and found the work interesting but there wasn’t a real fire behind me. I was interested in the music business but I found myself to be more captivated by the performances than anything. I had to push myself and believe that I was directed toward this path for a reason. The pandemic has put a stick in the mud but here we are and we’re making lemonade!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a developing recording artist currently working on my debut EP/project. I am also a songwriter, background vocalist, actress, and co-founder of a mobile app named BeautySku. BeautySku allows users to share, review and purchase beauty products. It was developed to help users make better purchasing decisions when in the store buying beauty products.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe it’s my work ethic. When I care about something I’ll work hard to make it happen.
