Life and Work with Adrienne Rose White

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Rose White.

Adrienne Rose, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started when I put on a pink plastic hula skirt, made a protest sign against evil stepsisters, and performed a dramatic reinterpretation of Cinderella. I was five years old and very ready for a new fairytale after burning through all my books and Disney VHS tapes. I worked tirelessly on every aspect of my one-woman show – from the script and costumes down to the programs. My mom tried to coax me into playing Sleeping Beauty so that I would take my afternoon nap. Mid-yawn, I said, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” So, I’ve been writing, producing, and performing for a long time!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth! I watch people I knew years ago have success, and I’m so happy for them. At the same time, it can be hard to remember that I’m on a different journey, and I don’t need to compare my success or journey to theirs. The only person I’m racing against is myself, and that’s the best piece of advice I can give – let others inspire you, learn from what they’ve done, but that doesn’t mean you have to imitate or compare.

Please tell us about your business.
As an actress, I play a lot of smart women who have a funny way of looking at the world, and as a writer, I write about the funny way I see the world. I’m most proud of a digital series I produced and co-starred in called Quirky Female Protagonist, and comedy-thriller that’s about to come out on Amazon and iTunes called The Witch Files. It’s the first feature film that I’ve had a prominent role; I play a high school senior named Greta, who wants to make it to the field hockey state championship or try dying. It’s hard to tell which way it will go for her! Aside from giving me the chance to go flying across the room and into a wall – legitimately the most fun I’ve had in my life, ever – the movie is special because of the characters. All the girls in the ensemble were so different and fully fleshed out, and the actresses that brought them to life were so talented. The script already passed the Bechdel test, but our dynamic made the movie stand out.

Who have you been inspired by?
Issa Rae, Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey, Amy Schumer. These hilarious women have all written their own work and their own tickets. They remind me that I don’t have to wait for someone else to say yes to make good work and tell funny stories.
