Inspiring Conversations with T’leya Scott of Dreamers & Believers

Today we’d like to introduce you to T’leya Scott.

T’leya Scott

Hi T’leya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is T’leya Scott. I am the Founder and CEO of nonprofit Dreamers & Believers. Dreamers and Believers is a day program designed to support adults with special needs, focusing on employment services, life skills building, and community integration. I started this business in 2017 with the purpose of enriching the lives of underserved adults with special needs, especially in South LA. With over seven years in business, I am the youngest day program owner within the South-Central Los Angeles Regional Center. My journey to this point started as a young teenager. When I was 14 years old, my youngest brother was diagnosed with Autism at the age of two. This life-changing experience became my true inspiration.

When he was diagnosed with Autism, I remember wanting to create a play place for him, tailored specifically for his needs, which ultimately led to the foundation of Dreamers & Believers.

As a young adult, I worked several jobs and ventured into corporate America. But my heart was still in serving those with developmental disabilities.

At the time, I knew a few people who were connected in this industry. I gained experience working in homes and residential facilities for adults with developmental disabilities. During this time, I took the opportunity to engage with every owner I worked with. I asked questions, drafted proposals, volunteered, and pitched myself—all because I wanted to understand the ins and outs of this industry.

My brother is 23 now, and even though he is non-verbal, he is my guiding light for everything I do with Dreamers and Believers. My ultimate aim is to make a difference in his community so that he truly has the resources he needs. I want to show him that I’ve actually dedicated my life to helping people who are just like him.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every business and every CEO encounters obstacles, but all the challenges propel us forward. I approach setbacks with a growth mindset, focusing on the lessons they offer rather than dwelling on them. This is one of the traits I am proud of, and it has really allowed Dreamers to evolve and grow continuously. When I started Dreamers and Believers at 24 years old, I was humble but feisty. Time and growth have led me to understand the importance of temperance and understanding different perspectives and issues. I’ve had to grow a lot in that area. I take pride in my ability to empathize and communicate effectively, whether with employees, parents, or others involved in our mission.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Nonprofit – Dreamers & Believers?
Success to me is defined as elevating everything I currently have in the works. Dreamers & Believers is committed to our impactful work in the community by connecting our clients with employment opportunities and raising awareness about adults with special needs. We’re looking forward to connecting with other governmental and non-governmental organizations to further our mission and expand the avenues of support available to individuals with special needs and their caregivers. Looking ahead, we are excited about the grand opening of our new building, which will serve as a community hub for hosting events and offering support services. Our focus remains on advancing inclusivity and advocating for individuals with special needs in South LA.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is not measured by client numbers or financial status. It’s all about what I am giving back—how much am I giving back? Am I actually making a difference in my community? It’s about the impact we create and the difference we make in our community. It’s about where you’re going and how many people you are taking with you. I love what I do, and success comes from the positive change I can bring and the lives we touch on the journey.
