Inspiring Conversations with Tiffany Orozco of Rising Above Cultural Expectations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Orozco.

Hi Tiffany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey in community college studying Criminal Justice, eventually transferring to CalState EastBay formally CalState Hayward. After finishing my undergraduate studies and obtaining my BA in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Corrections and a Minor in Sociology.

I worked in Juvenile Probation for a few years during which time I re-evaluated my career path as I was living and working in Oakland CA which was a bit hard seeing juveniles locked up or killed. As a result, I changed my area of focus and decided to go back to school for my Master’s in Social Work with an emphasis in Community Mental Health. This allowed me to study and gain experience in the Social Services and Mental Health field, I began working with severe and Persistently Mentally ill adults which ultimately lead to me pursuing a career as a Psychiatric Social Worker for the past six years. I became licensed three years ago and decided to start my private practice providing individual counseling and coaching to individuals struggling in their daily lives. My practice Rising Above Cultural Expectations (R.A.C.E) was inspired thru the struggles I’ve endured throughout my life and career while growing up in Oakland, CA, Experiencing poverty, trauma, community violence and systematic disadvantages as a minority and a woman.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road to where I am today. Overcoming fear, adversity and Impostor Syndrome. Often times when minorities attend Social Work school and obtain their Master’s degree that seems to be the end of the road for them as it’s hard trying to navigate and obtain 3200 hours of direct contact and 104 hours of individual supervision in order to sit for the National Exam. The exam was and is very intimidating as it’s a National Exam that’s four hours in length where your monitored during it. I must say the journey was hard yet rewarding as it taught me a lot about myself and how to be an efficient Social Worker/Therapist in the field.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Rising Above Cultural Expectations?

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Patience is a virtue and despite hardships and adversities, we’re all resilient. The most important thing for me was understanding that resiliency is an innate quality and we all possess it. We must learn to trust the process and overcome what we have endured in order to move forward in our lives and with the right support it is possible and necessary.
