Inspiring Conversations with Sydney Curls of Dr. Curls for the Girls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Curls.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in pelvic health started when I was in my second year of physical therapy school, and it was love at first sight. From the guest lecture to the first patient I shadowed (a transgender woman post-op vaginoplasty), I knew this would be the focus of my work. An internship, graduation, and my first pelvic floor course later I began my career as a Doctor of Physical Therapy in Los Angeles. I worked in two outpatient clinics, and while I’m grateful for the opportunities, learning, and mentorship I received – I knew that something was missing. I had always had a dream of having my own practice so I could serve clients on my terms without the constraints of time and insurance. I wanted to be able to practice in a way that protected me from burnout and ultimately allowed me to give my best self to everyone I served. I realized that dream in July of 2022 and have been blessed to serve both old and new clients in a more sustainable way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I admittedly didn’t know much about starting a practice and made some mistakes along the way that cost me time and money. I’ve been learning about websites, marketing, social media, scheduling, billing, taxes, compliance, etc. through my own research to help me continue to establish and grow the practice.

As you know, we’re big fans of Dr. Curls for the Girls. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Dr. Curls for the Girls serves all who have vaginas and/or identify as women improve their pelvic health through physical therapy and health education. I specialize in infertility, pregnancy, and postpartum but my practice includes other pelvic floor issues like sexual dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, urinary dysfunction, pelvic pain, etc. I also encourage people to engage in pelvic floor prehab – a preventative care program designed to help people connect with and improve their pelvic floor before problems arise. What sets me apart is the fact that I focus on the whole person and encourage autonomy in my treatment plans. I help my clients find their way to their optimal pelvic health in a rhythm that fits their lifestyle.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
There are many ways to work with, collaborate, or support me. I offer 1:1 pelvic floor physical therapy (virtual and in-person), virtual 1:1 masterclasses and have digital products for those seeking pelvic health support. For collaborations, I’m always open to community and provider education via webinars and on-site events. And of course, supporting my content at @drcurlsforthegirls on Instagram would be a great help.
