Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheryl Coughlan
Hi Sheryl, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for antiquing began about 23 years ago, following a severe accident that changed my life forever. I found myself in a tough situation, needing to earn money to keep a roof over my head. I discovered value in items that others discarded—whether left on the side of the road, in alleyways, or even in dumpsters. I would take these pieces home, hand-refinish them, fill my car to the brim, and sell them to antique and vintage stores stretching from Palmdale to Beverly Hills.
The beginning of this journey was challenging, but it eventually led me to open my first store in 2005 on Magnolia Blvd in Burbank. Over the years, my business evolved into the Estate Sale company I proudly own today. I’m deeply passionate about the history behind antique and vintage items, from jewelry and art to furniture, clothing, china, and small trinkets. The success of my business is intertwined with my ability to connect with clients during significant transitional phases in their lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road is rarely smooth, and where’s the fun in that? In any business—especially mine—I’ve learned many lessons the hard way. Each challenge has allowed me to reinvent myself and improve the business, making it more successful. When the pandemic struck, I felt a gut-wrenching fear that it could be the end. However, I persevered and expanded my services, which ultimately boosted our client base. I closed my store and completely reimagined my operations. I’m proud to say that those struggles have shaped Antiques on Magnolia into the thriving business it is today.
