Inspiring Conversations with Sean Haynes of Gainsbyhaynes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Haynes.

Hi Sean, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In a way, my journey really started in college. I attended the Univ. of Montana on a full scholarship to play football. Throughout it all I was riddled with injuries, which isn’t uncommon, guys are hurt here and hurt there year-round. For me, being in pain every single day/night, injury after injury and a couple of back-to-back foot surgeries had me seriously consider not pursuing a pro career. Curiosity got me to where I’m at now. Curiosity about how I could have been better prepared for my sport bundled with love for all things training. This is what lead to me doing a deep dive into Exercise Science, my body, functional movement, coaching and methods to manage/prevent pain in adults, athletes, and kids.

Over the past decade, I’ve furthered my education in the field by going back to school, studied & passed exams for multiple recognized certifications, gotten involved in internships at institutions such as Sports Academy (Thousand Oaks, CA), & Athletic Gaines (Los Angeles, CA), coordinated strength programs at Sierra Canyon HS, and in the midst of it all have gotten to work with some truly extraordinary individuals. Pro athletes, collegiate athletes, kids, mothers, fathers, business owners, you name it. It’s all been a wild ride. I’m just very grateful I get to wake up, get to do what I do, and help others navigate life through movement.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every college athlete has a NOW WHAT moment when it ends. True for any student, yes. For athletes, a lot of them pivot quickly, ready and prepared just like in the sport they played. A lot don’t. I know some that never really found their footing in life post-college. You spend so much time devoted to a craft, one day it ends and it’s difficult to care about something, especially another job, the same way. So for me, this was my first bump in the road, finding something I could have a passion for while also making a decent living in LA. No easy task for anyone. Luckily, in this space, I’m able to stay close to the sport I played by working with/training athletes. I may not be able to play anymore, but today I am still actively involved in the lives of prep athletes and the institutions that helped pave the way for me when I was growing up. To me, that’s everything and is a key driver in my day-to-day

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Gainsbyhaynes LLC. is a small business that offers a combination of in-person personal training and online programming for fitness/nutrition-related goals. What I want people to know most is that I have spent well over a decade in the fitness industry, servicing all age groups, from Pre-K to Seniors and virtually everything in between. Experience matters. In this time, I’ve gotten a grip on how to assess a client early to help build out a program that’s progressive and completable for the future. Fitness for people can feel like such an uphill battle taking into account life’s distractions, I want people to know that working with me can help you get on track and stay on track if you’re willing to let the process change you. No one person is the same and the workouts I create for you will reflect that. Results should come from something tailored to fit, not cookie-cutter.

Today, so many aspects of life is online-based & driven. I really want to start helping people reach their fitness goals online. In this way, I believe I’ll be able to do the most amount of good and service the most amount of people, not just in the States but in the world. I want my business to grow and have that much of an impact, it’s what gets me out of bed each day. Let’s get started!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The fitness field is a booming industry and covers a ton of different scopes of practice. There are A LOT of trainers in the world. LA is no exception. It can be difficult to stand out at times. When you’re a trainer and make the decision to go independent, there’s tremendous upside and freedom in that, but you also run a huge risk when you don’t work at a commercial gym that assists with marketing, lead generation, benefits, etc. You’re on your own. Since I’ve gone into business for myself, I run risk each day. I have to put myself and what I believe in out into the world each day. If I don’t, I can’t really make a living and do the most amount of good possible.
