Inspiring Conversations with Sarita Jackson of Global Research Institute of International Trade, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarita Jackson

Hi Sarita, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My mother, a retired banker, often said, “If you know business, you’ll always be employed.” This philosophy guided me through diverse interests—from theatre to journalism, and, ultimately, to political science, with a consistent goal: to run my own company.

After earning a doctorate in political science from Brown University in Provide, RI, I moved to Arlington, VA, to join a small consulting firm focused on economic development. During my tenure at this consulting firm, I was able to apply my knowledge of international trade policy, research skills, and understanding of the African and Caribbean regions to various economic development projects.

This role also offered the tools and skills needed to return to my hometown of Los Angeles to launch my own research firm–Global Research Institute of International Trade, LLC (GRIIT). The business development team at the aforementioned consulting firm patiently and excitedly took the time to meet with me after hours to provide insights into how the firm operated. These insights proved invaluable when I launched GRIIT in 2013, providing a solid foundation for my business strategy.

Twelve years later, GRIIT continues to provide useful trade policy analyses to help importers and exporters minimize their risks in the global market, save money, and access capital.

My mother’s advice has stood the test of time. Despite organizational restructuring and changes in job positions at previous employers, my firm has consistently provided me with a stable source of employment and additional income.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running my own business–Global Research Institute of International Trade (GRIIT)–for the past 12 years has been a series of challenges and rewards.

Before starting GRIIT, I experienced job instability in the private sector due to company downsizing, which taught me the importance of financial preparedness—a lesson that I carry into my own business practices today. My financial reserves during the downsizing helped me to stay afloat for nine months until I acquired another full-time professional position. Starting a business means being prepared for times when revenue and profits may slow down a bit.

Following the private sector downsizing, I transitioned to academia as a tenure-track political science professor. Even with job security having just received tenure and been promoted from assistant to associate professor, the drive to start my own venture was irresistible. Making the shift from academia to entrepreneurship was daunting, but that’s exactly why I named my company GRIIT. It stands not only for Global Research Institute of International Trade but also symbolizes the grit and determination needed to persevere, especially during tough times.

Being cautious with finances has been crucial. I prioritize financial health by avoiding excessive debt and having enough savings to sustain the business during lean periods. This careful risk management has allowed GRIIT to thrive.

Another part of my success has been building strong connections with those who practice effective business management. Finally, good financial management has given me the freedom to occasionally step back, recharge through travel, meet new people, and gain new experiences. These breaks are not just rewarding—they’re essential for my continued growth and well-being.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Whether it’s about a company minimizing risks, saving money, or accessing capital, GRIIT is a trusted guide that helps a business to make informed decisions that are critical to its success in the international market.

A company can navigate the global market successfully through our in-depth trade policy analyses, customized-market research, and strategic insights.

GRIIT succeeds when the world knows your business!

What are your plans for the future?
I’m planning to significantly enhance the services GRIIT offers to larger corporations. This will involve innovating our service offerings, improving our operational efficiencies, integrating cutting-edge technologies, and forming strategic partnerships to boost our capabilities.

Additionally, I’m eager to expand the public speaking aspect of our business. I plan to resume traveling across the United States and internationally to deliver talks that not only educate but also inspire action on global trade disparities, effective trade policies, and the empowerment of women in leadership roles.

On a personal level, my goal is to elevate my financial status to achieve greater wealth and financial freedom. This is not just about personal gain, but about securing the means to foster greater impact through my professional and philanthropic efforts.
