Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my journey in the LA comedy scene in September of 2021, although I started doing standup in 2018. Being in the LA comedy scene, I noticed that in most of the shows I was on, I was one of the only women on the show, and most lineups were predominately male/white/straight. Not only was it sometimes uncomfortable being the only woman on a show but being the only lesbian or queer person also added a level of discomfort. In December of 2021, I decided to produce my own show. I promised myself if I had some type of platform that I would do some good with it. Therefore, I decided to start a queer show called “Shes Theys & Gays”. Since starting “Shes Theys & Gays” I have been trying to put together as diverse lineups as I possibly can to have everyone represented on stage and to make comedy something it’s supposed to be relatable. Since December of 2021, I have independently produced over 50 standup shows.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Standup comedy production is a fickle b*tch. One show, you could sell 80 tickets and the next 15. The hardest part about producing is being able to bring people out to see new and upcoming comics that they have maybe never heard of.
