Inspiring Conversations with Nubia Macias of Nubia Meditation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nubia Macias.

Hi Nubia , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, I was introduced to nonviolence through my Peace & Conflict Studies program. I remain deeply grateful for Professor Nagler’s inspiring teachings on nonviolence, peace movements, and the vital importance of recognizing one another’s humanity to build a more peaceful and compassionate world.

Years later, I continue to practice these lessons by teaching mindfulness meditation in Southeast Los Angeles, my birthplace and hometown. One of my primary clients is LA Care Health Plan.

As a mindfulness meditation teacher, my core mission is to guide others in cultivating inner peace so they can become more compassionate and peaceful individuals—spreading positive change within families and communities.

Now, I create the healing spaces I longed for growing up in Los Angeles as a first-generation daughter of Mexican immigrants, facing anxiety and adversity. Years of struggling with anxiety and alcohol ended when I started therapy and meditation, inspired by Tara Brach’s “Radical Acceptance.”

Drawing on over a decade of personal practice and professional experience in community wellness, I create spaces centered on compassion, consent, and belonging, especially for those
historically excluded from traditional wellness spaces.

I offer trauma-informed, culturally sensitive mindfulness practices designed to foster healing, connection, and resilience. Through bilingual meditation sessions, group workshops, retreats, and custom programs, I help individuals and communities pause, breathe, and reconnect—with themselves and one another. By nurturing these inclusive spaces, I am committed to supporting long-term personal and community transformation toward greater peace and compassion.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
From a very young age, I felt a strong desire to give back to my community. This passion led me to pursue a career in public service, where I spent most of my professional life working in local government to support underserved populations. However, after experiencing burnout in this demanding field, I sought a new path—one that would allow me to continue helping others while also nurturing my own growth and creativity. Launching a mindfulness meditation business has been a unique and rewarding challenge. While mindfulness is becoming increasingly mainstream, introducing its concepts and teachings to underserved Spanish-speaking communities presents its own set of obstacles. Many of these teachings can be perceived as too foreign or in conflict with their religious beliefs. I am currently working on growing my customer base and audience across a variety of social media channels.

As an undergrad, I first learned about the concept of nonviolence via my Peace & Conflict studies program. To this day, I’m incredibly grateful for Professor Michael Nagler’s powerful teachings on nonviolence, peace movements, tolerance, and the importance of seeing the humanity in each other. He taught his students that a more peaceful existence and a more peaceful world are possible. One of my main clients has been LA Care Health Plan, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to support their work.
