Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Lang
Hi Noah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I never wanted to do anything else. Frankly, I have no plan B. For awhile I wanted to be a music video director as the late 90s through mid 2000s were unreal in terms of creativity in the music video field – I was obsessed with people like Marcus Nispel, Marc Webb, Samuel Bayer, Marc Klasfeld – but the floor fell out right when I was starting to think about what a career could look like. Producing was always something that interested me. I didn’t feel the identity of a director but I knew I needed to be a part of filmmaking and since I like sucking at things in order to become good at them, I was fortunate to be able to find a way to suck at this for awhile. Now I think I am pretty alright at it. I’ve made a lot of movies. Been a lot of amazing places. Made a lot of friends. Have no enemies. I’ve done alright.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No but I don’t think that’s really a bad thing. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and there are so many things I wish I could just ever so slightly do again. A take two on certain moments in my career. I mostly don’t lose sleep over those mistakes though. The struggle with what I do is that being a producer can be very lonely and that is why I’ve worked so hard to build a tribe. People like my production company partners Rod Blackhurst and Ross O’Connor, my co-writer Blake Hoss, my collaborators like Talia Lugacy, Justin Oakey, Christian Lybrook, Evan Buxbaum, and Patrick Biesemans. We’ve all struggled together so it’s not quite as lonely anymore. Not smooth perhaps but more fun than it has any right being.
As you know, we’re big fans of Witchcraft Motion Picture Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Witchcraft Motion Picture Company is a production and development company specializing in producing features for overlooked creators. We don’t have money but we have time. Time can be just as valuable. We try to find the people that won’t get their calls returned but absolutely should. And we like to make stuff with them and be friends with them and hopefully keep making stuff. We are known for films like the crime thriller BLOOD FOR DUST starring Scoot McNairy, Kit Harington and Josh Lucas which is on Hulu now, the queer midnight movie SWALLOWED with Cooper Koch, sci-fi drama CREEP BOX which just came out a few weeks ago, Talia Lugacy’s THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY which was a Cassavetes Nominee at the Spirit Awards, and a pretty wild documentary about mudding culture in Florida called RED, WHITE & WASTED that premiered at Tribeca amongst many others. We like to find ways to get onto set. If there’s a way to do it for a budget that is available, we will. A bad day onset beats a good day in a cubicle. Even if you’re underpaid. Which we usually are.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Well it’s always gotta be my wife Tai who is a hero and superhuman in her abilities as a mother and partner. And my kids Sonny and Shiloh. When Shiloh was born I had to leave to shoot back to back movies on and off for 4 months when she was only a month old. She seems to have forgiven me for that. They’re my family and they tell me how much they love me everyday. How can you not give your people credit for that? I’m very fortunate to have an enormous tribe. My parents are absolute units. Mom is an artist and was a costume designer, Dad is an actor. When I said I have no plan B, I really meant that. They didn’t leave me much choice. And bless them for that.
