Inspiring Conversations with Nicole Holland of Cactus Mart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Holland.

Hi Nicole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up between the high and low deserts. My grandpa had his little homestead cabin in Landers since the 1960s, with not much to do except explore the deserts you learn a lot about wildlife and the native plants/cactus that survived in a pretty harsh climate. So I think I had a natural draw & appreciation of getting an opportunity to work with a landscaping company in the low desert (Palm Desert area) there, I was really hands-on with native plants and watching them thrive as we turned client’s homes into a wildlife gardens. It’s always a good feeling watching hummingbirds and butterflies flock to a natural food source garden. When our local Cactus Mart came up for sale in Morongo Valley, I knew in my heart I wanted it. I wanted to really teach people about gardening on a more personal level. So, long story short, I bought it and never looked back!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With any business, you have your base concept and you stay focused on your beliefs about it. I wanted to teach people about native plants and cactus to help them grow their own gardens and that’s what we do. We’ve tried different ideas or various concepts and if they worked great! If not, back to the basics.

As you know, we’re big fans of Cactus Mart. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Cactus Mart is more then just cactus…. It’s an appreciation for the deserts and all that it has to offer. Building a beautiful native garden that attracts birds and butterflies is just one aspect. Local artists and potters in our gift shop, unique species of cactus and succulents. We are mostly known for our dig your own cactus sign that the kids have a great time getting to “dig” up their own little cactus and pot it and take home to care for.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Hopefully bring more appreciation to your gardening and desert wildlife
