Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Cornelo.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Mel Method launched in 2020 in the thick of the pandemic as a way for people to work out from home when businesses and fitness studios were all shut down. Since I was 17 years old, I always had a passion for being a fitness instructor whether it was cycle, barre, or pilates. Using my background and experience in teaching, I began piecing together what I wanted the platform and workouts to look and feel like. Building MM off a foundation of community was essential, especially during a time when we all were so isolated. Once I was up and running with live Zoom classes and an On Demand library of workouts, I was overwhelmed by the support and engagement. MM is just over two years old and is still going strong online, as well as in-person pop-up classes, and now offering in-person private and semi-private sessions.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Honestly, it’s been pretty smooth sailing overall. I am not the most tech-savvy person, and luckily had a lot of help getting the site up and running which I’m so grateful for because that would have been the biggest stressor. Of course, there are tech issues that arise here and there, but nothing I’d consider a true struggle.
We’ve been impressed with Mel Method, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Mel Method workout is an elevated mat pilates and barre-based class. With an emphasis on form and mind-body connection, we move through sculpting and toning exercises that target the full body. Using optional 1-2 pound hand/ankle weights, anyone can jump on a class from anywhere in the world via computer or phone. I also offer a cardio class in addition to Sculpt, which is amazing for getting a good sweat and strengthening your cardiovascular endurance while just using body weight. My goal is to challenge clients, push them to work harder than they think they can, but also make everyone feel successful. There is no point in making a class excruciatingly hard if your clients walk away feeling discouraged. I try to find the sweet spot where modifications are offered, the moves are a physical and mental challenge, but we have fun in the process of it all as one community. MM would be nothing without the women (and men!) who show up not only to take class but to support others on the platform. I’ve seen friendships and connections made through MM and that is something I’m most proud of.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I think the most important thing is not to be afraid to put yourself out there and to be authentic. Talk about your business with anyone who will listen because you never know what you can learn from someone else’s experience. You’d be surprised how willing people, even strangers, are to do what they can to support or spread word about what you do. If I’m chatting someone up at a coffee shop or the nail salon, they will walk out knowing what Mel Method is. Have the mentality that everyone is a potential client, and you are always a student.
